The first reliable account of a tsunami was in July 1571 and refers to an event of regional scope and associated with an earthquake. According to Archivo do Acores (l887), one ship sailing up to 60 leagues (about 300 km) offshore in deep water felt unexpected and extreme agitation of the sea '"as if they had struck shoals". This analogy is commonly reported by crews sailing in the open ocean during the passage of tsunami waves. (reference #5046)
