EF2 tornado, Lake Mccurtry Dam to Sumner, Oklahoma, May 9, 2016

From Lake Mccurtry Dam to Sumner, this EF2 tornado ran 6.3 miles across Payne and Noble counties on May 9, 2016, touching down at 5:58 PM CDT and reaching 600 yards wide. It killed nobody, and did $260,000 of property damage.

The rating scale

    Light damage. Surface peeled off some roofs, gutters and siding damaged, branches broken, shallow-rooted trees pushed over.

    Moderate damage. Roofs badly stripped, mobile homes overturned or badly damaged, exterior doors lost, windows broken.

  3. EF2111 to 135 mphthis tornado

    Considerable damage. Roofs torn off well-built houses, frame homes shifted on their foundations, mobile homes destroyed, large trees snapped or uprooted, cars lifted off the ground.

  4. EF3136 to 165 mph

    Severe damage. Whole stories of well-built houses destroyed, large buildings badly damaged, trains overturned, trees debarked, heavy cars lifted and thrown.

  5. EF4166 to 200 mph

    Devastating damage. Well-built houses leveled, structures with weak foundations moved some distance, cars thrown and large missiles generated.

  6. EF5over 200 mph

    Incredible damage. Strong frame houses swept off their foundations, car-sized missiles thrown more than 100 meters, steel-reinforced concrete badly damaged, high-rise buildings deformed.

  7. Unrated

    The survey recorded a tornado but could not put a number on it, most often because it crossed open country and damaged nothing a rating can be read from.

What the Weather Service recorded

With the help of an upper low, storms fired along the dryline in central Oklahoma on the 9th, with some of them becoming severe.

This tornado developed on or just northeast of Lake McMurtry with tree damage first observed along NS-3275 Road just northeast of the lake. A mobile home was destroyed, two home received roof damage and significant tree damage occurred as the tornado approached the Payne County line. The tornado crossed into Payne County near Glencoe Road.

This tornado moved into Payne County from Noble County near Glencoe road moving northeast and then north-northeast crossing back into Noble County between Country Club Road and Sangre Road. At least two houses and two outbuildings were damaged in Payne County in addition to tree and power pole damage.

This tornado moved back into Noble County from Payne County between Country Club Road and Sangre Road and moved north-northeast for about a mile and half. Damage was confined to trees and power poles, but broken wood power poles still support an EF2 damage rating.
