EF3 tornado, Wood Lake, Nebraska, August 11, 2011

This EF3 tornado ran 0.5 miles across Cherry County on August 11, 2011, touching down at 7:05 PM MDT and reaching 900 yards wide. It killed nobody, and did $15,000 of property damage.

The rating scale

    Light damage. Surface peeled off some roofs, gutters and siding damaged, branches broken, shallow-rooted trees pushed over.

    Moderate damage. Roofs badly stripped, mobile homes overturned or badly damaged, exterior doors lost, windows broken.

  3. EF2111 to 135 mph

    Considerable damage. Roofs torn off well-built houses, frame homes shifted on their foundations, mobile homes destroyed, large trees snapped or uprooted, cars lifted off the ground.

  4. EF3136 to 165 mphthis tornado

    Severe damage. Whole stories of well-built houses destroyed, large buildings badly damaged, trains overturned, trees debarked, heavy cars lifted and thrown.

  5. EF4166 to 200 mph

    Devastating damage. Well-built houses leveled, structures with weak foundations moved some distance, cars thrown and large missiles generated.

  6. EF5over 200 mph

    Incredible damage. Strong frame houses swept off their foundations, car-sized missiles thrown more than 100 meters, steel-reinforced concrete badly damaged, high-rise buildings deformed.

  7. Unrated

    The survey recorded a tornado but could not put a number on it, most often because it crossed open country and damaged nothing a rating can be read from.

What the Weather Service recorded

Severe thunderstorms developed in north central Nebraska on the afternoon of August 11th in the vicinity of a warm front draped from southwest South Dakota into northeast Nebraska. The storms quickly became tornadic with six tornados occurring by the end of the evening. The largest tornado was classified as an EF3 and touched down over southeast Cherry county and traveled into Brown county before lifting. The other tornadoes produced minimal damage and were rated EF0's and EF1's. Large hail also impacted these areas, with the largest size being tennis ball size.

A tornado developed five miles south-southeast of Wood Lake and traveled to the south. It was on the ground for approximately 20 minutes and was up to a maximum of a half mile wide with maximum winds of 140 m.p.h. The tornado caused damage to two tree groves. One tree was debarked, uprooted, and moved while several other trees were uprooted. Additionally, a windmill was destroyed and another three were damaged; a steel culvert from Plum Creek washed out and was broken and displaced three-quarters a mile downstream. Also, two miles of barb wire fencing was destroyed.
