EF2 tornado, Caldwell to Milan, Kansas, March 5, 2026

From Caldwell to Milan, this EF2 tornado ran 1.0 miles across Sumner County on March 5, 2026, touching down at 11:34 PM CST and reaching 120 yards wide. It killed nobody.

Preliminary. This is NWS ICT's damage survey, filed in the Damage Assessment Toolkit as Sumner 1. The rating, the path and the casualties are the survey's and can change while it is revised. The Storm Prediction Center compiles the official record of 2026 from these surveys and publishes it in the spring of 2027; this page moves to that tornado's permanent address when it does.

The rating scale

Tracks are drawn in the color of the rating. The Enhanced Fujita scale rates the damage rather than measuring the wind: the speeds are what that damage is taken to imply.

  1. EF065 to 85 mph

Light damage. Surface peeled off some roofs, gutters and siding damaged, branches broken, shallow-rooted trees pushed over.

  2. EF186 to 110 mph

Moderate damage. Roofs badly stripped, mobile homes overturned or badly damaged, exterior doors lost, windows broken.

  3. EF2111 to 135 mphthis tornado

Considerable damage. Roofs torn off well-built houses, frame homes shifted on their foundations, mobile homes destroyed, large trees snapped or uprooted, cars lifted off the ground.

  4. EF3136 to 165 mph

Severe damage. Whole stories of well-built houses destroyed, large buildings badly damaged, trains overturned, trees debarked, heavy cars lifted and thrown.

  5. EF4166 to 200 mph

Devastating damage. Well-built houses leveled, structures with weak foundations moved some distance, cars thrown and large missiles generated.

  6. EF5over 200 mph

Incredible damage. Strong frame houses swept off their foundations, car-sized missiles thrown more than 100 meters, steel-reinforced concrete badly damaged, high-rise buildings deformed.

  7. Unrated

The survey recorded a tornado but could not put a number on it, most often because it crossed open country and damaged nothing a rating can be read from.

What the survey found

Damage occurred to the top of a tank battery, overturned a pumpjack, snapped a few power poles and cedar trees along with damage to multiple outbuildings

Written by NWS ICT in the NWS Damage Assessment Toolkit. A survey is revised as better evidence arrives.

The damage survey

16 damage points were recorded along this path by NWS ICT, in the Damage Assessment Toolkit the survey teams carry. The strongest indicator was rated EF2. The highest wind the damage implies is 135 mph.

  • Outbuilding damaged with walls and roof collapsed. Remnants are scattered to north and northwest. Nearby outbuilding had door dented in.
  • Barbed wire fence pulled with debris from the shed located nearby.
  • One snapped wooden pole. Debris is strewn into nearby fields. There are some wires down but one remained connected to the nearby poles.
  • Around 50 or so large round hay bales strewn across Eden Road on either side of it.

What the Weather Service recorded

During the late evening of Thursday March 5th, a supercell thunderstorm tracked out of northern Oklahoma and into southern Kansas. As the storm crossed into Kansas, the rotation strengthened and eventually produced a couple of tornadoes over western Sumner County. One tornado damaged a few farm outbuildings, multiple trees and overturned a pumpjack. It was rated an EF-2. The other tornado damaged farm outbuildings and utility poles. Thankfully there were no injuries or fatalities. The storm produced damaging straightline winds as well. ||Additional storms developed across central Kansas with up to nickel to quarter sized hail reported. There were storms with winds around 60 mph as well including one that damaged a cedar tree.

A storm survey found a tornado led to damage occurring to the top of a tank battery, an overturned pumpjack, a few snapped power poles and cedar trees. There were additional to damage to multiple outbuildings.

An occluded tornado produced damage to a couple of outbuildings, and it moved several round hay bales. They were strewn on either side of the road. A couple small headstones in the cemetery were knocked over.

The forecast that day

The Storm Prediction Center had this point in a Slight Risk, with a 0.02 chance of a tornado within 25 miles. The outlook in force was issued at 00:57 UTC.

What this means

Ratings are the survey's, read off the damage rather than measured; the rating scale is above. A survey can be revised, so the rating, the path and the casualties can all still change.
