EF1 tornado, Madison County, Alabama, June 22, 2026
This EF1 tornado ran 5.5 miles across Madison County on June 22, 2026, touching down at 3:58 PM CDT and reaching 60 yards wide. It killed nobody.
Preliminary. This is NWS HUN's damage survey, filed in the Damage Assessment Toolkit as New Market Tornado. The rating, the path and the casualties are the survey's and can change while it is revised. The Storm Prediction Center compiles the official record of 2026 from these surveys and publishes it in the spring of 2027; this page moves to that tornado's permanent address when it does.
The rating scale
Tracks are drawn in the color of the rating. The Enhanced Fujita scale rates the damage rather than measuring the wind: the speeds are what that damage is taken to imply.
EF065 to 85 mph
Light damage. Surface peeled off some roofs, gutters and siding damaged, branches broken, shallow-rooted trees pushed over.
EF186 to 110 mphthis tornado
Moderate damage. Roofs badly stripped, mobile homes overturned or badly damaged, exterior doors lost, windows broken.
EF2111 to 135 mph
Considerable damage. Roofs torn off well-built houses, frame homes shifted on their foundations, mobile homes destroyed, large trees snapped or uprooted, cars lifted off the ground.
EF3136 to 165 mph
Severe damage. Whole stories of well-built houses destroyed, large buildings badly damaged, trains overturned, trees debarked, heavy cars lifted and thrown.
EF4166 to 200 mph
Devastating damage. Well-built houses leveled, structures with weak foundations moved some distance, cars thrown and large missiles generated.
EF5over 200 mph
Incredible damage. Strong frame houses swept off their foundations, car-sized missiles thrown more than 100 meters, steel-reinforced concrete badly damaged, high-rise buildings deformed.

What the survey found
The tornado touchdown southwest of the pond located in Sharon Johnson Park snapping the first initial softwood trees and downing large branches on the property. The tornado continued across the pond, spraying leaf debris across a wide area, before crossing the property line behind the RV park on the premises, further snapping additional hard and soft wood trees.
The tornado then crossed Winchester Road and produced additional damage along Frank Hereford Road. Several trees were sporadically snapped and uprooted along this road, on the farms that dotted the landscape between Hurricane Road and Frank Hereford Road. The road network in this area was too rural for additional specific roadways near the damage other than farmland.
Damage was noted on Hurricane Road close to Mountain Fork Road, where a few trees were snapped. In this location, 5 to 6 wooden power poles were snapped. This was not due to the tornado, it was due to the force of the 70 MPH winds from the line of severe storms moving through the area. Specific convergent tornado damage was noted in this area separate from the damage associated with the line of storms, which matches up very well with radar data that survey teams interrogated.
After producing this damage, the tornado climbed up and over Backbone Mountain, before producing the final damage found on the survey today along Upper Hurricane Creek Road. In this location, the tornado was at its widest (approximately 60 yards) and produced additional hard and soft tree damage. Trees were snapped and uprooted in this area, concurrent with the final rating of EF1 tornado with 90 MPH winds.
The Jackson County line is located approximately 1/4 mile to the northeast of this point. For now, the tornado stops at this point, but it is believed that the tornado continued into portions of Jackson County Alabama and Franklin County Tennessee. Pending additional surveys later this week, this will mark the end point of the tornado for now.

40 damage points were recorded along this path by NWS HUN, in the Damage Assessment Toolkit the survey teams carry. The strongest indicator was rated EF1. The highest wind the damage implies is 107 mph.
- Estimated with here is 150 yards. Most trees in this location are 8 to 10 inches in diameter, with perhaps one or two that are a foot wide
- Tree 2 to 3 feet in diameter snapped close to the base
- Several large tree trunks snapped between 1 to 2 feet and diameter. Parts of a tin roof peeled up and spread out in a field.
- Several 1 foot diameter trees uprooted, and several large tree branches snapped.
