Dense Fog in Utah
Every dense fog event the National Weather Service has filed in Utah, year by year, with the most significant episodes. Fog reducing visibility to a quarter mile or less, filed where it caused accidents or disruption.

The most significant
Ranked by deaths, injuries, damage and size together.
- Dense Fog in Utah, February 3, 2002Dense fog caused an 11-vehicle pileup on Interstate 80 between Tooele and Grantsville. There were 3 fatalities and several injuries in an accident that involved 8 semi tractor trailers, 2 passenger cars and a pickup truck.
- Dense Fog in Utah, January 10 to 11, 2003A Life Flight helicopter crashed in thick fog that shrouded much of the Wasatch Front on the evening of the 10th. The crash occurred just southwest of the Salt Lake City International Airport, killing the pilot, a paramedic, and seriously injuring a flight nurse.
- Dense Fog in Utah, January 8, 2003Dense fog formed along the Great Salt Lake during the morning commute, causing a 59 car pileup between the Salt Lake International Airport and Saltair. Amazingly, there were no fatalities, but 14 people were injured and taken to local hospitals.
- Dense Fog in Utah, November 27, 2003Dense fog developed during the morning in portions of Utah County, with the visibility less than 50 yards in spots.
- Dense Fog in Utah, December 16, 2022Dense fog near Brigham City was reported the morning of a vehicle crash that killed one.
- Dense Fog in Utah, February 12, 2005A strong inversion and resulted in dense fog, reducing visibilities to near zero at times, creating very hazardous driving conditions in the Salt Lake Valley. Temperatures near or slightly below freezing allowed the fog to freeze in spots further degrading road conditions.
- Dense Fog in Utah, March 14 to 15, 2010A period of precipitation followed by clearing skies allowed areas of dense fog to develop over portions of eastern Utah.
- Dense Fog in Utah, January 18 to 21, 2009Abundant snow cover and a stable atmosphere resulted in periods of dense fog across the Eastern Uinta Basin.
- Dense Fog in Utah, January 28 to 29, 2010Dense fog formed across the lower valleys of eastern Utah and western Colorado as clearing skies combined with low-level moisture provided by recent precipitation.
- Dense Fog in Utah, December 23, 2016Dense fog formed in several valleys in eastern Utah as low level moisture remained trapped behind a departing winter storm.
- Dense Fog in Utah, January 21 to 22, 2020Trapped low level moisture led to areas of dense fog across the lower valleys in eastern Utah.
- Dense Fog in Utah, December 18 to 19, 2009A cold and stable airmass resulted in dense fog formation across the lower valleys of western Colorado and eastern Utah.
- Dense Fog in Utah, February 3 to 4, 2010Strong valley temperature inversions combined with moisture from snow-covered ground to produce widespread dense fog.
- Dense Fog in Utah, February 4 to 5, 2010Strong and persistent temperature inversions over snow-covered ground caused dense fog to form in low valley locations.
- Dense Fog in Utah, February 16 to 17, 2010Strong and persistent temperature inversions combined with ample low-level moisture to produce dense valley fog.
- Dense Fog in Utah, February 2 to 3, 2010Inversions and low level moisture from snow on the ground resulted in areas of dense valley fog in eastern Utah.
- Dense Fog in Utah, January 14, 2015Low level moisture from recent snowfall remained trapped in the lower atmosphere and resulted in some areas of dense fog in eastern Utah.
- Dense Fog in Utah, January 7 to 8, 2016A moist disturbance passed over the region and created areas of dense fog in eastern Utah.
- Dense Fog in Utah, January 10, 2019Lingering moisture trapped underneath a surface inversion in the wake of a departing winter storm allowed dense fog to form across portions of eastern Utah.
- Dense Fog in Utah, February 15, 2019Rapid clearing and very wet low levels in the wake of an atmospheric river event led to areas of dense fog in the northern and central valleys.
- Dense Fog in Utah, January 5 to 6, 2020Trapped low level moisture in the wake of a departing storm led to areas of dense fog in southeast Utah.
- Dense Fog in Utah, December 19 to 20, 2020Low level moisture remained trapped across eastern Utah and, when combined with clear skies and light winds, another round of dense fog developed in some of the northeast and east-central valleys.
- Dense Fog in Utah, December 19, 2020Low level moisture trapped across eastern Utah, combined with clear skies and light winds, led to areas of dense fog in some of the northeast and east-central valleys.
- Dense Fog in Utah, December 14, 2022Low level moisture remained trapped across the region in the wake of a departing system. This led to the development of dense fog across the Eastern Uinta Basin.
- Dense Fog in Utah, December 29, 2024As several weak systems moved through the area during the last week of 2024, they helped to create pools of rich moisture trapped in the lower elevation valleys. These pools of moisture condensed during the overnight period into widespread areas of dense fog.
