Dense Fog in Colorado
Every dense fog event the National Weather Service has filed in Colorado, year by year, with the most significant episodes. Fog reducing visibility to a quarter mile or less, filed where it caused accidents or disruption.

The most significant
Ranked by deaths, injuries, damage and size together.
- Dense Fog in Colorado, August 24, 2008Extremely dense fog was sited as playing a major role in the fatal crash of a single engine, fixed wing Piper aircraft.
- Dense Fog in Colorado, June 26, 1997A woman was killed when she pulled in front of an oncoming tractor trailer just northwest of Berthoud. Dense fog had reduced visibility to less than 100 yards at the time of the accident.
- Dense Fog in Colorado, December 17 to 18, 1996Dense fog along the Colorado River Basin from De Beque Canyon to New Castle resulted in several collisions which closed I-70 in both directions for three hours. The visibility in some areas was reduced to 10 feet. Only minor injuries were reported.
- Dense Fog in Colorado, March 14 to 15, 2010A period of precipitation followed by clearing skies allowed areas of dense fog to develop over portions of western Colorado.
- Dense Fog in Colorado, January 14 to 16, 2017Persistent low-level moisture lingered in portions of central and north-west Colorado which led to another round of dense fog.
- Dense Fog in Colorado, January 23 to 24, 2020Trapped low level moisture led to areas of dense fog across the lower valleys in western Colorado.
- Dense Fog in Colorado, December 27, 2024Several winter storms passed through eastern Utah and western Colorado during the last week of 2024, bringing widespread precipitation in the form of rain and snow to the region.
- Dense Fog in Colorado, December 28, 2024The unsettled pattern that characterized the last week of the month of December brought widespread precipitation to eastern Utah and western Colorado with regularity.
- Dense Fog in Colorado, January 2 to 3, 2026Potent surface moisture lingered within Colorado valleys overnight on January 2 and 3 resulting from widespread rain and snow over the prior two days. A deep upper-level ridge moving overhead made way for clear skies though.
- Dense Fog in Colorado, January 28 to 29, 2010Dense fog formed across the lower valleys of eastern Utah and western Colorado as clearing skies combined with low-level moisture provided by recent precipitation.
- Dense Fog in Colorado, January 7, 2015Snow melted during the day moistening the near-surface air mass. As temperatures cooled overnight, dense fog developed across portions of western Colorado.
- Dense Fog in Colorado, January 11 to 12, 2015Low level moisture from recent snowfall remained trapped in the lower atmosphere and resulted in some areas of dense fog in western Colorado.
- Dense Fog in Colorado, January 13 to 14, 2015Low level moisture from recent snowfall remained trapped in the lower atmosphere and resulted in some areas of dense fog in western Colorado.
- Dense Fog in Colorado, January 13 to 14, 2017A very moist airmass resulted in the formation of dense fog in some western Colorado valleys.
- Dense Fog in Colorado, October 24, 2018Recent precipitation was a major cause of dense fog that formed across portions of western Colorado.
- Dense Fog in Colorado, February 14 to 15, 2019Rapid clearing and very wet low levels in the wake of an atmospheric river event led to areas of dense fog in many of the lower valleys.
- Dense Fog in Colorado, January 21 to 22, 2022Clearing skies paired with fresh snowfall in the wake of a departing system resulted in the development of dense fog across portions of northwest and west-central Colorado.
- Dense Fog in Colorado, January 1 to 2, 2026A deep Pacific trough brought moist southwesterly flow to much of the western CONUS on January 1. A weak upper-level jet streak arrived in coincidence with the surge of moisture, prompting widespread precipitation in western Colorado throughout the morning of the 1st.
- Dense Fog in Colorado, March 4 to 5, 1997A combination of freshly fallen snow and clear skies overnight allowed for areas of dense fog to develop. Several accidents were reported as visibilities were reduced to near zero at times.
- Dense Fog in Colorado, February 7, 1998
- Dense Fog in Colorado, January 15 to 16, 2004Low level moisture and stable conditions produced widespread dense fog across the lower elevations of southwest Colorado. Law enforcement agencies reported visibilities below 1/4 mile throughout the lower elevation roadways of their jurisdictions.
- Dense Fog in Colorado, December 18 to 19, 2009A cold and stable airmass resulted in dense fog formation across the lower valleys of western Colorado and eastern Utah.
- Dense Fog in Colorado, February 24, 2009A moist and stable airmass resulted in dense fog formation along portions of the lower Colorado River and Yampa River basins of western Colorado.
- Dense Fog in Colorado, February 18 to 19, 2010Afternoon showers primed the atmosphere with sufficient, low-level moisture, which then combined with cooling overnight temperatures to produce dense fog.
- Dense Fog in Colorado, November 24, 2013Recent snowfall increased moisture in the lower atmosphere which became trapped under high pressure. This resulted in areas of dense fog.
