What happened

The episode as NWS OHX wrote it up.

After a very dry April, conditions improved for Middle Tennessee during May 2026. The second half of the month was particularly active with above normal precipitable water values resulting in daily rounds of showers and thunderstorms. By the end of the month, most of Middle Tennessee received 5 to 10 inches of beneficial rainfall with the highest amounts falling over the southern and eastern half of the area. Most of Middle Tennessee received 75 to over 100 percent of monthly normal precipitation. This rain did help improve drought conditions. By the end of the month, about 34 percent of the area was classified as at least severe drought - an improvement from 100 percent in April. About 5 percent of this was classified as extreme drought which was down from about 38 percent in April.

.KEY MESSAGES...

- Dry and cooler weather persists through the weekend with only a
low rain chance for southern Middle TN Friday night.

- Medium chances for showers and thunderstorms return Tuesday into

.SHORT TERM...
(Tonight through Friday Night)
Issued at 1028 PM CDT Thu Apr 30 2026

A quiet night is ahead for Middle TN as cooler and drier air remains
in place, allowing for overnight temperatures to fall into in the
mid and upper-40s. This calm weather remains in place Friday with
these below normal temperatures persisting as we start the month of
May. Temperatures will warm into the upper-60s to low-70s by the
afternoon. There is a surface low along the Gulf Coast that will
bring a low chance for light rain mainly across southern Middle TN
and the Plateau Friday night. However, any showers that do develop are
not expected to be impactful with rain amounts only amounting to
a couple hundredths.

&&

.LONG TERM...
(Saturday through next Friday)
Issued at 1028 PM CDT Thu Apr 30 2026

Any light rain from the Gulf Coast disturbance will come to an end
Saturday morning, and then we're in for a gorgeous weekend. There
is a dry cold front that dives south through the area Saturday,
providing a slight cooldown. Highs on Saturday will mainly be in
the low to mid-60s, but will warm to near 70 for most on Sunday.
Temperatures will warm back to near normal values for the start of
the work week.

As beneficial as this week's rain was to our drought situation, we
do still need more. For our next appreciable chance for rain, that
will come Tuesday into Wednesday as a low pressure system approaches
from the west. Lots of model variability regarding detail and
timing, but for now, rain chances are generally in the 40-60% range.
This system will send a cold front through in the Wednesday or
Thursday time frame, giving us a drier and cooler end to next
week.
