A prolonged heatwave impacted portions of eastern and central Virginia over the course of three days from June 23 to 25. Each day, heat indices reached 105-115 degrees with high temperatures in the upper 90s to around 100 degrees and dew points in the upper 70s. Dew points increased to around 80 degrees locally in the evenings. Given the duration and magnitude of the heatwave, little relief occurred overnight between each day.

.SYNOPSIS...
A large area of high pressure will expand across the Eastern CONUS,
bringing very hot conditions to the region through much of the week.
Low-end chances for afternoon showers and thunderstorms make a
return late in the week.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
As of 630 AM EDT Monday...

Key Messages:

- Heat index values climb to 105 to 110+ across the region this
afternoon.

- An Extreme Heat Warning is in effect for much of the forecast
area, with a Heat Advisory in effect for far western and eastern
portions of the area.

This morning, a large ~597 dm ridge aloft continues to build
over the local area. ~1023 mb surface high pressure remains
centered just to the south of the area. Skies are generally
clear this morning outside of a few (diminishing) higher clouds.
Temperatures are in the low to mid 70s inland and upper 70s
closer to the coast and in urban areas.

850 mb temps inch up further to 21-23 C this afternoon as the high
pressure ridge/dome aloft strengthens to ~598 dm, which is
approximately 2 standard deviations above climatology. Meanwhile,
high pressure at the surface remains centered near or just south of
the area. A weak boundary will drop south through the area early in
the day with a modest northerly wind shift. The evolution of this
boundary complicates the afternoon dew point forecast, with some
potential for continued low-level moisture advection through the
day. Regardless, a prolonged heat wave begins today and lasts
through the end of the week. The temperature forecast today remains
largely unchanged, with widespread upper 90s to around 100 F.
The current forecast has dew points lowering into the lower 70s
by the afternoon, which will yields peak indices of 105-110 F
for most of the area (the immediate coast may be a tad cooler).
It seems unlikely that dew points fully mix out into the mid
60s, as suggested by the GFS. While strong instability will be
in place over the area, a capping inversion and strong
subsidence will prevent any shower/storm development. Lows
tonight will range from the mid-upper 70s, with around 80 F
possible in the urban areas and along the shore of the
Chesapeake Bay.

As for headlines, Extreme Heat Warnings remain in effect for the I-
95 corridor from the Tri-Cities/Richmond Metro and points N and E.
In addition, Extreme Heat Warnings are now in effect for much of
south central Virginia, southeast Virginia (including Hampton
Roads), and northeast North Carolina. Given the heat persists for
the next few days with heat indices likely nearing 110 F each day,
the warning is in effect through Wednesday to address the prolonged
nature of the heat. Elsewhere, Heat Advisories remain in effect
today for heat indices 105-109 F with Extreme Heat Watches Tuesday
and Wednesday. The one exception are the Maryland Beaches where a
Heat Advisory is in effect through Wednesday.

.SHORT TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY NIGHT/...
As of 315 AM EDT Monday...

Guidance continues to show Tuesday as the hottest day of the week as
slightly higher thicknesses and 850 mb temps allow temps to increase
to around 100 F for most of the area, with lower 100s in the I-95
and I-85 corridors. Afternoon dew points again are an area of
uncertainty, but upper 60s/lower 70s dew points and the
aforementioned temps yield heat indices in the the 105-110+ F range
for the entire area. The expansiveness of the 110 F heat indices
will likely be greater Tuesday given the slightly warmer temps.
Additionally, model guidance remains a little more excited about
isolated storm development in the afternoon. Forecast soundings from
the ECMWF show slightly cooler temps in the 800-700 mb layer and
thus lower CIN. Thus, a rogue storm is possible in the Piedmont or
along coastal sea breezes in the afternoon and evening. PoPs have
ticked up a bit, with slight chances for an evening shower or
thunderstorm now over much of the area. The GFS still remains a very
wet outlier. Another very warm night Tuesday night with lows in the
mid to upper 70s (potentially around 80 F in the urban areas again).

Generally more of the same Wednesday but temps (and heat indices)
should be slightly cooler. Peak heat indices generally 105-110 F per
the current forecast, with some areas of 110+ F south of Richmond
and down into northeast North Carolina. Confidence in heat indices
on Wednesday is lower due to potential convection. Regarding
convection, with the ridge beginning to break down some, there are
20-30% PoPs for most of the area as isolated storm development is
expected by the afternoon. Given the strong instability in place,
any storm could quickly pulse up and become briefly strong to
severe. Organized severe wx is not expected, however. Any showers or
storms may last into the early overnight hours, before dissipating
due to the loss of daytime heating. Overnight lows remain mild with
readings in the low to mid 70s (some upper 70s closer to the coast).

Looking back at climate data, Richmond has only recorded 3 or more
days in row of 100+ degree high temperatures 13 times throughout the
entire climate record dating back to 1871. There is a chance that
this heat wave will add a 14th time to that list if RIC hits 100F
Monday-Wednesday. Also, since 1943 RIC has only hit heat index
values at or above 110 six times in the month of June.

.LONG TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
As of 315 AM EDT Monday...

Key Messages:

- Extended duration heat wave continues through the end of the week.

- Isolated to scattered thunderstorms possible by the
afternoon/evening hours of Thursday into next weekend.

The heat wave continues into the middle and end of the week with the
prolonged duration (and very warm overnight temperatures)
exacerbating impacts on vulnerable populations and those who perform
outdoor activities/work. High temperatures Thursday into next
weekend remain well into the 90s, with heat indices 100-105+.
Additional Heat Advisories are very possible. Overnight lows in the
mid-upper 70s (around 80 F in the urban areas) also continue,
providing little relief from the heat.

While the heat continues, the ridge continues to flatten. Lee
surface troughing also develops by Thursday and Friday which will
serve as a focus for slightly higher coverage of afternoon showers
and storms. While the highest PoPs are currently W of the area, it
seems plausible that a few storms are likely, especially across the
Piedmont, by the end of the week. A weakening frontal boundary N of
the area will bring slightly higher shower and thunderstorm chances
as we head into the weekend.

VFR conditions persist through the 12z/23 TAF period. High
pressure continues to dominate over the region. A few CU clouds
are expected to again develop this afternoon (bases ~5000 feet).
Winds are light, mostly out of the SW around 5 kt, becoming N
later this morning as a weak boundary moves through the area.
Mainly clear skies and light and variable winds tonight with
high pressure remaining over the area.

Outlook: Dry and VFR conditions are expected to prevail through the
middle of the week as strong high pressure builds over the region.

- Benign marine conditions through the coming week.

A weak frontal boundary will push south over the local waters today.
Although no cooler air will be present to produce an uptick in wind
speeds, a directional shift will occur with winds becoming N & NW by
late this morning (under 10 kt) and then light and variable (local
sea breezes) during the afternoon. High pressure lingers over the
region through the end of the week with benign marine conditions
continuing. This pattern will be conducive to daily afternoon sea
breezes. Waves and seas will remain at or below 2 ft through the
period.
