Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Salt Lake City UT 315 PM MDT Sat Aug 16 2025 .SYNOPSIS...Lingering moisture will maintain a chance of showers and thunderstorms this evening, mainly across northern Utah. High pressure will bring a warming and drying trend heading into early next week. Monsoon moisture will return to the area by midweek, and linger into next weekend. && .SHORT TERM (Through 12Z/6AM Monday)...A general southwesterly flow prevails across the forecast area this afternoon. A weak shortwave embedded within this flow is noted lifting through southern Nevada/southwest Utah, and is helping to fuel a cluster of showers and thunderstorms across central Utah. Modest moisture (dew points in the 40s) is limiting instability, and convection has largely reached its peak intensity as of mid afternoon. This convection will gradually wane as instability erodes, but likely linger into the evening hours with the greatest coverage remaining across central Utah. Drier air in the wake of this weak shortwave will overspread the region Sunday. Lingering moisture may allow for isolated thunderstorms over northern Utah Sunday afternoon, otherwise dry conditions and seasonal temperatures can be expected to close out the weekend. .LONG TERM (After 12Z/6AM Monday), Issued 258 AM Saturday...Drier air will build into the region under southwest flow through at least Monday. By Tuesday, the upper level ridge will shift eastward, allowing for mid-level moisture advection to begin across the Great Basin. For Tuesday, this will be mainly an increase humidities across western and southern Utah (~60% of ensemble members increase western Utah PWs above 0.60", 80% exceed this value along the Utah/Arizona border region). By Wednesday, sufficient moisture will be in place to bring the threat of thunderstorms to the southern Utah mountains (represented by 80% of ensemble members). By Thursday, the majority of ensemble members continue to deepen this moisture and spread convection across the remainder of the higher terrain and adjacent valleys. Looking at the longer term, the majority of ensemble members support an ideal upper level ridge position to bring a more energetic monsoon surge into the region through the next weekend and into early the next week. && .AVIATION...KSLC...Isolated showers and thunderstorms have developed mainly over the higher terrain surrounding the Salt Lake Valley. These showers are likely to continue through roughly 01-02z, and may be capable of producing gusty and erratic outflow winds. Southerly winds will likely persist outside of these outflow winds, increasing in speed by the early morning hours. VFR conditions will prevail. .REST OF UTAH AND SOUTHWEST WYOMING...Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms will continue through the afternoon and early evening across central/northern Utah, with showers ceasing across southern Utah as dry air moves in from the southwest. Any showers may be capable of producing gusty and erratic outflow winds, but storms will trend weaker through the afternoon. VFR conditions will prevail. && .FIRE WEATHER...A weak weather disturbance passing through the region will continue to fuel showers and thunderstorms through this evening across central and eastern Utah. Lightning and brief heavy rain will be possible with these storms, along with gusty outflow winds. Thunderstorm coverage across northern Utah will remain more isolated in nature this evening, while drier air begins to spread into southern Utah. This drier air will spread from southwest to northeast across the state on Sunday. Lingering moisture will maintain a slight chance for showers and thunderstorms across northern Utah Sunday afternoon and evening, while the remainder of the state remains dry. High pressure will strengthen across the region through the first half of the week resulting in a warming and drying trend. With this drier airmass temporarily becoming established over the region, daytime RH will fall into the single digits across most valleys by Monday afternoon, and near 15 percent across higher elevations, while overnight recovery becomes increasingly poor Sunday and Monday nights. This high will begin to pull monsoon moisture northward into the region as early as Tuesday afternoon, with a more substantial surge of moisture expected later in the week. This moisture will bring an increase in showers and thunderstorms capable of wetting rainfall during the latter half of the week, as well as elevate RH values and trend temperatures cooler. && .SLC WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES...
