A heat dome continued to strengthen and expand across the eastern CONUS during late June. The upper level pattern was dominated by a large 594 dam Bermuda High over the eastern US with a deep trough over the West Coast. This pattern persisted for several days before the ridge finally broke down and the westerlies advanced further south.

Another warm and muggy night across the Mid-South. Temperatures
are in the mid to upper 70s with dewpoints in the mid 70s. A few
airports are reporting light fog as winds have gone calm, but
widespread dense fog is not anticipated.

The current heat dome will continue to strengthen and expand
across the eastern CONUS today through at least the middle of next
week. The upper level pattern remains dominated by a large 594
dam Bermuda High over the eastern US with a deep trough over the
West Coast. This pattern will persist through at least Wednesday
before the ridge finally begins to break down and the westerlies
begin to advance further south.

Oppressive heat and humidity will remain over the Mid-South
through this period. Shallow diurnal showers and thunderstorms
are expected each day, but will not play a significant role in
extinguishing the heat. An areawide heat advisory is in effect for
today with more advisories likely Monday through Wednesday as
heat indices peak at 105F or greater each day. NBM guidance
continues to underdo heat indices across NE MS and portions of W
TN Monday through Wednesday, mainly due to underdone high
temperatures. Nonetheless, a persistence forecast is the best
application in this pattern. Expect highs in the middle 90s each
day with heat indices at or above 105F areawide.

The Bermuda High will begin to weaken on Thursday as an easterly
wave sneaks under the ridge. Temperatures will not budge much, so
additional heat headlines may be needed. By Friday, zonal flow
will be prevalent across the belt line of the CONUS with weakening
downstream heights. Several weak shortwaves will translate across
the Central Plains and Lower Mississippi Valley by late week,
resulting in increased coverage of showers and thunderstorms each
day. A more organized system may arrive late next weekend as upper
level flow shifts northwesterly.

could be enhanced this afternoon as an inverted trough impinges

middle of next week. Relative humidity will remain elevated
throughout the period, falling no lower than 50 percent. Light fog
