On March 24th, a trough moved over the American Samoa to produce slow moving showers and thunderstorms for the Tutuila, Aunu u, and Manu a islands. Back building thunderstorms occurred late in the morning and early afternoon hours over Tutuila Island. This led to continuous heavy rainfall that produced widespread flash flooding. Rainfall observations across the island include 2.92 inches of rain in one hour at Aasu village (ASPA/American Samoa Mesonet) and 3.72 inches of rain in three hours at WSO Pago Pago.

A video given to WSO Pago Pago showed significant flooding along airport road in the Cost-U-Less/GIAS region. Rainfall is estimated to be around 2.5 inches between 11 AM and 12 PM.
A NWS employee reported flash flooding along the correctional facility region with rapid buildup of streams overflowing the roadway. At least 6 inches of water was observed moving over the road to flow into the Pala Lagoon.
A NWS employee observed flash flooding on Fagaima road midday on the 24th as water covered the entire road and flowing towards the Georgina Building. A video sent to WSO Pago Pago shows at least 6 inches of water that covered the roadway rapidly moving eastward.
A NWS employee reported flash flooding along the main road between Alofau and Amouli. Water completely covered the main road and flowed downhill. Estimated rainfall in the region was 4.5 inches in 3 hours.
A video from an American Samoa Community College student showed significant flooding on the campus roads and sidewalks. Water can be seen entering into one of the buildings. Estimated rainfall was around 4.5 inches in 3 hours.
A NWS employee reported debris such as rocks, tree limbs, and garbage from an overflowing stream, Sagamea Stream, in Nuuuli Village near H&L Mart 2 and Minks AC covered the main road. Estimated rainfall was 4 inches in three hours.
A Facebook video shows flash flooding due to water rapidly flowing from the mountains into the village. The video shows water rushing into houses and spoke of crop damage in the region. The video is from Kiei Tamate Lei atua’s Facebook page.
