.SYNOPSIS...
Active weather returns for the entire Northern Mainland as a
strong westerly flow aloft will persist into the middle of next
week. Snow and blowing snow will impact the Arctic as a gale force
low shifts across the Arctic today through Monday. Mixed
precipitation and snow will impact the West Coast today with that
same front moving into the Eastern Interior on Monday, bringing
accumulating snowfall. More rounds of snow will move into the
Southern Interior and southern West Coast Monday night through
Wednesday as a stationary front sets up across that area.

.KEY WEATHER MESSAGES...
Central and Eastern Interior...
Dry weather and seasonal temps are expected Interior wide through
the afternoon today. A fast moving frontal system from the west
will move into the Interior late this evening and shift east
overnight and into Monday morning, bringing widespread snowfall
to the Interior. Snowfall will likely be impacting the Interior
Monday morning, so commuters should be prepared for wintery
conditions. The front shifts out of the state Monday afternoon
with only lingering snow showers. However, southwest winds become
quite gusty Monday afternoon and continue into the overnight.
Blowing snowfall is likely over the Highway Summits. Temps rising
into the mid to upper 30s post-front will mean wet and slushy
roads are possible into Monday night. Snowfall accumulations look
to be 1 to 3 inches Interior wide with the heaviest snowfall over
the AK Range and Chena Basin upper elevations, where locally
heavier accumulations are anticipated. More snow returns Monday
night through Wednesday across the AK Range and S Interior, with
several more inches of accumulating snowfall possible.
- Dry through this afternoon, with a fast moving front bringing
widespread snowfall to the Interior tonight and Monday morning,
exiting Monday night.
- Expecting 1 to 3 inches across the Interior, highest amounts in
the AK Range and Upper Chena Basin.
- Monday morning commute will likely be impacted by accumulating
snowfall.
- More accumulating snowfall is likely Monday night through
Wednesday across the S Interior and Alaska Range as a front
remains over the area. Several more inches of snowfall
accumulations are possible. Expect warming temps with continued
partial melting along the roads in the afternoon periods, with
refreezing at night.
West Coast and Western Interior...
Yet another warm front is moving into the Bering Coast this
morning and will shift inland through tonight. This front will
bring snow turning to rain or mixed precipitation (freezing
drizzle through this morning) from Kotzebue southward. This front
will bring 1 to 2 inches of snowfall from Kotzebue north, before
changing to mixed precip. A third system moves into the entire
region on Monday night and Tuesday with more widespread and
heavier precipitation, with mixed precip and snowfall expected,
with the mixed precip line moving south over the Lower Yukon and
YK Delta. This continues through Wednesday.
- A winter weather advisory remains in effect for mixed
precipitation for Nome to Golovin, with either light freezing
drizzle and/or or light freezing rain, with 0.02 or less inches
of ice accumulation anticipated.
- Accumulating snow of 1 to 2 inches will fall over the northern
portion of the Interior and West Coast, with light mixed precip
from the YK Delta to Kotzebue Sound.
- The next low moves in Monday night with more chances for snow
and mixed precip. The track of this low is looks to be further
south than the first two and will continue to bring
precipitation through Wednesday.
North Slope and Brooks Range..
Active weather ramps up today, with a strong gale force low which
will move from Wrangel Island this morning and track into the
high Arctic through Monday. Snow and blowing snow will move from
Point Hope across the Arctic today as this low brings widespread
snowfall and gale force winds to the Arctic, thus winter weather
advisories remain in effect for the entire Arctic Coast and parts
of the Arctic Plain, with the worst conditions anticipated along
the coast.
- Temperatures rapidly increase today as the front moves across
the region.
- This warm front will bring snow and gale force south/southwest
winds as it moves east through tonight and Monday. Blowing snow
is likely as there will be a combination of falling and blowing
snowfall. A brief period of blizzard conditions is possible but
given the warmth and lack of current transportable snow,
unlikely. Expect 2 to 4 inches of snow with this front.
- Winter weather advisories remain in effect for most of the North
Slope and Arctic Coast region through Monday night, persisting
the longest over the E Arctic where winds will remain the
strongest as the low moves east.

.FORECAST ANALYSIS AND DISCUSSION...
A powerful low is moving northeast into the Chukchi Sea from E
Siberia. Currently that low is approximately 989 mb, but will
strengthen to 978 mb as it moves northeast through the Arctic. An
associated warm front will move across the NW Arctic and into the
Arctic today and tonight, and then into the Interior, as well.
This will bring widespread snowfall, albeit not particularly
heavy, as it moves across the N Mainland. Mixed precip and local
freezing drizzle will occur over the West Coast today. A
stationary front will then persist over the S Mainland through
Wednesday, with more rounds of snowfall and some mixed
precipitation through Wednesday.

.EXTENDED FORECAST DAYS 4-7...
Wednesday, the final low pressure system will be moving inland,
bringing widespread snowfall to the Mainland, mixed with some
rain/snow over the S Mainland. Temps are above average pretty much
statewide on Wednesday. A cold front moves east on Thu and Thu
night with a brief drop in temps. However, the global models
remain consistent in building in another ridge across the eastern
half of the Mainland and across the AK Range, sometime Friday and
moving north through the weekend. More snow will be possible along
this warm front as it moves north. Areas in the S Interior look to
warm a lot for the weekend as this looks to be a mild chinook
flow.

Southern Interior valley locations will rise into the mid 30s Monday through Wednesday during the day, with temps falling back below freezing at night. Snowfall accumulations will come and go all the way through Wednesday as a front remains draped over the region. Expect: - Snow accumulations in the range of 1 to 3 inches Sunday night and Monday. Higher snow totals are locally possible across the Upper Chena Basin.
