As an abnormally dry summer came to an end, drought conditions only continued to worsen across Middle Tennessee in September 2024. Prior to rainfall received from the remnants of Hurricane Helene, rain deficits continued to grow across the area. By the end of the month, about 75 percent of the area was in at least the severe drought category with 21 percent classified as extreme drought. Fortunately, several inches of rain were received during the last days of September from the remnants of Hurricane Helene which should offer drought relief into the fall.

Issued at 819 PM CDT Sat Aug 31 2024 Thunderstorm activity through this evening generally favored southern and eastern portions of Middle TN, but now that the sun has set, storms are diminishing. This trend will continue through the late evening hours, leading to a quiet night. Patchy fog is possible tonight in areas that received rain. Meanwhile, surface obs show a cold front situated to our west over the Arkansas/Missouri area. This front moves through our area tomorrow, allowing for storms to redevelop by late morning and into the early evening. With CAPE values around 1000 J/kg, PWAT values of 1.75 to near 2 inches, and the boundary, can't rule out a stronger storm in the afternoon. But with weak shear at less than 20 knots, the threat for organized severe weather remains very low. Inverted-V soundings suggest gusty to damaging winds would be the primary threat along with heavy downpours and frequent lightning. Activity should diminish by sunset tomorrow with the passage of the front. && .SHORT TERM... (Rest of today through Sunday) Issued at 1129 AM CDT Sat Aug 31 2024 It's quite a bit more humid feeling outside this morning compared to this time yesterday. Temperatures have been slightly subdued west of I-65 by the increasing cloud cover moving in from the west, while dewpoints are a couple of degrees higher than yesterday's trend. Regardless, we'll still on track for a warm day. Higher humidities will make for max heat indices in the upper 90s. Some showers may sneak into our western counties through the day, and while they may contain some thunder, the better chance for storms is over our eastern half. Mean surface CAPE values according to the HREF are around 1500 to 1800 j/kg this afternoon, which is certainly enough to feed some tall storms, but we'll be lacking shear to allow anything to become too organized. So expect some tall storms with gusty winds as updrafts collapse and heavy rainfall (thanks to PWATs of around 1.9 inches according to this morning's balloon launch). We should see storms back off this evening as they loose diurnal support. Places that receive rain can expect at least light fog overnight tonight. Sunday will bring more showers and storms with similar threats of gusty winds and heavy rainfall. The threat of organized severe storms remains low tomorrow as well. && .LONG TERM... (Sunday Night through next Saturday) Issued at 1129 AM CDT Sat Aug 31 2024 We'll see temperatures turn cooler after Sunday as the upper trough axis passes overhead. Surface high pressure centered over the Great Lakes region should keep most showers and storms south of us for the first half of the work week, but also not allow the midstate to get too swelteringly hot. As this surface high pushes east, moisture may start to work it's way north into the Tennessee Valley, introducing at least scattered showers and storms during the latter half of the week. We'll have to see how an approaching upper level low develops as we head into next weekend. It should increase low level moisture and if a boundary can swing through late week or next weekend, perhaps widespread showers could be in the works...we'll certainly need it. && .AVIATION... (06Z TAFS) Issued at 1219 AM CDT Sun Sep 1 2024 Dense fog is likely overnight, especially at SRB and CSV as relative humidity values are already at 100%. Other terminals could see areas of patchy fog, but likely not as dense. Calm winds overnight will pick back up between 5-7 kts out of the north around 18Z.
