An abnormally dry August led to worsening drought conditions, especially across southwest Middle Tennessee. Precipitation totals were below average across the area with Middle Tennessee's climate stations reporting rainfall deficits of around 1.50 inches to nearly 3 inches for the month. For the Nashville area, August 2024 was the 11th driest August on record, and the summer of 2024 was the 17th driest summer on record. By the end of the month, about 40 percent of Middle Tennessee was in at least moderate drought conditions. Of this, about 18 percent was in at least severe drought status with about 8 percent in extreme drought.

Issued at 854 PM CDT Wed Jul 31 2024 The MCS that attempted to dive south across the Cumberland Plateau faded and went just east of the area. It did put out an outflow boundary, which a few storms were able to form along/ahead of the boundary earlier this evening. However, most of this isolated activity has diminished over the past hour or so. Overnight tonight, it's possible that some showers/isolated storms develop but otherwise quiet weather should be anticipated. Widespread convection or severe weather should not be anticipated. Overnight low temperatures will be quite muggy, only dropping into the low to upper 70s. For tomorrow, forecast is a little uncertain when it comes to precipitation chances in the afternoon. Overall, we should be fairly quiet during the daytime hours...but hoping I don't eat those famous last words. If there were daytime thunderstorms, they are mostly likely along the Cumberland Plateau. Eyes will be focused to our north/northwest as we'll be watching for another potential MCS sliding southeast across the Midwest. We may not see any convection in the area until after dark depending on how things trend. The main threats with these storms would be damaging winds, cloud-to-ground lighting, and heavy downpours. Most of us will have a couple days to dry out a little, so perhaps the flash flood threat will be lower, especially with the expected faster movement of these potential storms. On the heat front, it looks very hot once again tomorrow. In terms of temperatures, we may be even warmer, approaching the triple digits in a few locations. That being said, the dewpoints do drop slightly...keeping maximum heat indicies around to slightly above 105 degrees. && .SHORT TERM... (Rest of today through Thursday) Issued at 1106 AM CDT Wed Jul 31 2024 Hot and humid conditions continue again today. 10 at 10 would suggest upper 90s once again this afternoon and with persistent dew points in the upper 70s, Heat Index values will soar close to 110 in many spots west of the Cumberland Plateau -- and without any relief in sight today. A storm or two has affected far reaches of the Upper Cumberland this morning, but latest CAMs suggest that's going to be all for us today. Now, I'm not completely hanging my hat on that. We're still in this northwest flow aloft until tonight and there are storms upstream of Middle TN at forecast time. Current trajectories would have them (at best) clipping the Upper Cumberland later this afternoon. This also doesn't account for afternoon storms to just develop along old outflow boundaries. Will maintain a 30 PoP east of I-65, but we'll take the break in storm activity, if we end up getting it. Coming out of the northwest flow tonight will be welcomed after two or three busy radar days, but this also means that upper ridging will begin to have more of an influence on the region leading to tomorrow potentially being the hottest day of the week. Latest NBM dew points seem reasonable at this point Thursday afternoon, which means we'll be back to Heat Advisory levels once again. An associated boundary will pass through the mid-state Friday, bringing rain/storm chances back to the area both Friday and again Saturday. Best PoPs look to be relegated east of I-65 at this point, but I'm sure this will need to be refined over the next couple of days.
