Thunderstorms developed during the afternoon and evening hours as a surface trough and upper level short wave trough moved through the area. Some of the storms became severe with the initial threat being large hail, with the largest hail the size of tennis balls in Hettinger County to the west of Lake Tschida.

Thunderstorms developed during the afternoon and evening hours as a surface trough and upper level short wave trough moved through the area. Some of the storms became severe with the initial threat being large hail, with the largest hail the size of tennis balls in Hettinger County to the west of Lake Tschida. Later in the event, damaging wind gusts became the main concern. The greatest reported damage was in the Turtle Mountains region of north central North Dakota, where a movie drive in restaurant was severely damaged near Lake Metigoshie, and near Belcourt where a home, playground equipment, and trees were damaged.

SOUTHWESTERN STARK COUNTIES THROUGH 430 PM MDT...
At 406 PM MDT, Doppler radar was tracking a strong thunderstorm 12
miles southwest of South Heart, or 20 miles southwest of Dickinson,
moving northeast at 35 mph.
HAZARD...Wind gusts up to 50 mph and nickel size hail.
SOURCE...Radar indicated.
IMPACT...Gusty winds could knock down tree limbs and blow around
unsecured objects. Minor hail damage to vegetation is
possible.

18 thunderstorm wind, 7 hail. Local standard time, as filed.
Hail fell at a campground at Lake Tschida causing damage to campers.
Strong thunderstorm winds in the Minot area downed tree branches and caused some shingle damage.
The Metigoshe Drive In building was severely damaged by thunderstorm wind gusts with the front awning and much of the roof completely torn off.
Strong thunderstorm winds damaged playground equipment, knocked over some trees, severely damaged a home, blew a shed down, and pushed two dumpsters.
Large tree limbs were blown down.
