.SYNOPSIS...
A weak area of low pressure will dive toward the Mid-Atlantic for
the start of the week. High pressure builds in for the middle of the
week as the surface low moves offshore. Another system moves in
Wednesday night/Thursday, with high pressure returning for the end
of the week. Another surface low moves traverses through the eastern
US next weekend.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH MONDAY/...
The first wave of radar echoes are showing up on KDIX. Only some
sprinkles being reported at KRDG and K22N, and not much more
than that right now. The bulk of the activity will hold off
until towards midnight.

Otherwise, weak low pressure is now over northern Ohio and will
track east until it reaches western PA for the overnight
period. Ahead of it, there will be some weak impulses of
vorticity aloft moving through along with weak warm air
advection in the lower levels. This should help to spread a few
showers into eastern PA by the latter half of the evening with
chances for showers reaching central/northern NJ by the
overnight period. Worth stressing, any precip should be light
but it may fall mainly as wet snowflakes over the southern
Poconos into NW NJ with a mix of rain/snow showers farther south
towards the Lehigh Valley and mainly just rain showers around
the urban corridor. Again, POPs only topping out around 30 to 40
percent so this is not a widespread soaking rain or anything.

Chances for a few rain/snow showers linger during the overnight
period as 2024 starts off with lows generally in the mid 30s,
except upper 20s to low 30s over the southern Poconos and NW NJ.
If any snow accumulation occurs, it should be mainly limited to
elevations above 750 feet or greater over the southern Poconos
but even here it would only be at most a half inch or so but
probably not even this much.

Going into the daytime hours on New Year's Day, weak low
pressure remains in the vicinity of SE PA / southern NJ /
northern Delmarva to start the day before eventually pushing
south and essentially redeveloping east of Virginia / North
Carolina by the evening. This will occur as the main vort max
aloft associated with the upper level trough advects from Ohio
south and eastward into Virginia. In terms of sensible weather
for our area, this will keep it mainly cloudy through the day
with there continuing to be some scattered light rain/snow
showers around becoming mainly just rain showers by midday into
the afternoon. Best chances for any precip should be areas near
and south of the urban corridor with POPs diminishing farther
north. But again, highest POPs for Monday will still only be
around 40 percent or so. Temperatures will be similar to today
with highs mainly in the mid 40s.

.SHORT TERM /MONDAY NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
An upper level trough swings out on Monday night with a weak surface
low diving southeastward offshore. A few showers will hang around
for the first half of the night within lower Delaware and the
Eastern Shore but not expecting much from this overall. Clouds will
linger through most of the night under the northwest flow behind the
departing clipper system, slowly clearing out by the early morning
hours on Tuesday. Lows on Monday Night will get down into the upper
20s/low 30s.

Ridging and surface high pressure build in for Tuesday. The
resulting large scale subsidence will result in sunny skies for the
day. Temperatures will generally be in the low to mid 40s. A nice
early January day overall.

The ridge axis will move overhead and offshore on Tuesday Night with
surface high pressure sliding by to the south on Wednesday. Skies
will be mostly clear through Tuesday Night, with some clouds moving
in on Wednesday ahead of the another system. Lows on Tuesday Night
will get down into the mid to upper 20s, with an array of 40s
expected for Wednesday.

.LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY NIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY/...
A split flow pattern approaches for Wednesday Night and Thursday.
The southern and northern branches will try to phase but that
phasing looks to occur far enough east for our region to escape any
significant impacts. A weak area of low pressure and cold front
associated with the northern stream will move in on Wednesday night,
while an area of low pressure associated with the southern stream
slides by to the south and offshore. Most of the precipitation looks
to come in at a favorable time for at least some light snow showers,
mainly along and west of the I-95 corridor. Not expecting any
significant accumulations Wednesday night into Thursday, though some
measurable snow is possible (NBM probability of measurable snowfall
west of the I-95 corridor ranges from 15-25% for SE PA and northern
NJ with upwards of 30-35% within the higher elevations of the Pocono
Plateau and northern NJ). Temperatures on Wednesday Night will be in
the upper 20s and low 30s.

Temperatures warm through the day on Thursday as some rain showers
will linger with a distant coastal low pulling away. Outside of any
showers, it will be a mostly cloudy day, with temperatures in the
low to mid 40s.

Thursday Night through Saturday morning will be quiet as upper level
ridging builds in. An expansive area of surface high pressure will
swing down from Canada and be the dominant feature for the end of
the week. Temperatures will be near seasonal normals for early
January for this part of the forecast.

That brings us to next weekend. Important to note that this is the
day 6-7 period, but deterministic guidance and ensembles show a
signal for a system to move in somewhere in the Saturday/Sunday
timeframe. NBM did include likely PoPs overnight Saturday into
Sunday and did elect to keep that as there is rather good agreement
among the deterministic guidance of some precipitation during that
timeframe. The main question that we will attempt to answer over the
next several days is what type of precipitation it will be. This
looks to be the best chance so far this season for widespread
measurable snowfall, however that isn't exactly a high bar to clear.
Long story short, this system bears watching, but it is way too
early to speculate on any specific impacts.

.AVIATION /03Z MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG,
KILG, KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas...

Tonight...VFR through the first half of this evening with MVFR
cigs developing from north to south around the late evening into
the overnight period. This should start around 03Z to 04Z for
RDG and ABE with MVFR CIGs likely developing at the I-95 TAF
sites around the 05Z to 06Z timeframe. Remaining VFR at MIV and
ACY. There will also be some scattered light rain/snow showers
around by late evening into the overnight with the best chances
for any snow showers being at RDG and ABE. Winds becoming light
and variable. Moderate confidence.

Monday...Low stratus with MVFR cigs persisting around the I-95
TAF sites and points north with MVFR eventually expected to
develop by afternoon for MIV and ACY. There will be a continuing
chance for a few showers around but mainly south of RDG and
ABE. Winds light and variable becoming N/NE around 5 knots.

Outlook...

Monday Night...Mainly VFR, though some MVFR ceilings are possible
early, mainly from KPHL on south. Northerly winds around 5-10 kt.
Low confidence on any restrictions. High confidence in wind speed
and direction.

Tuesday...VFR. Northwest winds around 5-10 kt. High confidence.

Tuesday Night through Wednesday...VFR. Westerly winds around 5-10
kt. Moderate confidence

Wednesday Night through Thursday...sub-VFR conditions possible with
scattered rain and snow showers. West/southwest winds around 5-10
kt. Low confidence.

Friday...VFR. Northwest winds around 10 kt. Moderate confidence.

No marine headlines expected through the near term. Southwest
winds 5 to 10 knots tonight and then eventually northeasterly
