Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Elko NV 131 AM PDT Sat May 25 2024 .SYNOPSIS... Scattered showers continue this morning across the region as a trough of low pressure aloft passes through the Intermountain West. There is a chance for isolated thunderstorms in the late morning through mid afternoon across Eastern Nevada. A ridge of high pressure begins to build Sunday, leading to warmer temperatures through the early portion of next week. A disturbance reaching the area by late Tuesday will moderate temperatures and lead to chances of precipitation through the middle portion of next week. && .SHORT TERM...Saturday and Sunday Scattered showers persist across the forecast area this morning associated with a trough of low pressure aloft. The late morning to early afternoon hours feature a chance for afternoon thunderstorms across Eastern Nevada. HREF probabilities show about a 20% chance of thunderstorms across parts of Elko and White Pine counties due very modest instability. Model guidance shows the shower and thunderstorm activity ending by mid afternoon today, with dry air moving in. There will also be a westerly breeze across the forecast area today as the storm system makes its way through the Intermountain West. However, winds are forecast to abate overnight as the trough exits the region and pressure gradients relax. Afternoon highs are forecast to jump several degrees on Sunday as high pressure begins to build over the area. Afternoon highs are forecast to generally be in the 70s across the region, with parts of northern Nye County potentially reaching the low 80s on Sunday. Dry weather is forecast for Sunday as a result of the ridge building over the area. .LONG TERM...Monday through next Saturday Dry conditions expected early next week as a ridge of high pressure builds over the Intermountain West. Highs will rise into the lower to mid 80s and overnight lows in the 40s. A weak upper- level disturbance will bring light rain showers with isolated thunderstorms across far northeastern Nevada Tuesday afternoon. Winds will be fairly light Monday but southwest winds will increase by midweek as another trough slowly moves into the Pacific Northwest. This will also lead to a chance of isolated showers and thunderstorms across Northern Elko County Wednesday afternoon. Dry conditions expected to continue through the end of next week. Highs will mostly be in the 70s with overnight lows in the 30s and 40s. && .AVIATION...Partly to mostly cloudy this morning with virga or light rain showers over much of the region. Showers taper off from west to east, ending by around noon at KWMC, by 2pm at KBAM, and by the mid to late afternoon hours at KEKO and KELY. All terminals can expect gusty westerly winds this afternoon and early evening of generally 10-15kts gusting 20-25kts. && .HYDROLOGY...Temperatures will quickly warm Sunday and early next week and flows on many small creeks and streams are expected to again rise, possibly into action stage for some, such as Lamoille Creek. The lower Humboldt continues to run strong with Battle Mountain currently in action stage and Comus forecast to enter action stage early next week.
