Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Las Vegas NV 1238 AM PDT Wed Aug 28 2024 .SYNOPSIS...Continued dry conditions with slightly above normal temperatures are expected today and Thursday before a modest increase in mid-level moisture arrives Friday and Saturday, with isolated thunderstorms possible mainly in the high terrain of Northwest Arizona and the eastern Mojave Desert. && .SHORT TERM...through Thursday. Early morning satellite imagery depicts mostly clear skies across the region with a batch of mid-level moisture across central and eastern Arizona associated with the monsoonal flow. This moisture will remain east of us today, though some scattered cumulus may develop across terrain features in the afternoon as the flow aloft takes on a more southerly component thanks to a developing weak low pressure center offshore. This general flow pattern will continue into Thursday, slowly advecting moisture northward, however, any moisture advances will be pretty limited and chances of any precip in our region through Thursday remain mainly east of us across the higher terrain of northern Arizona. Meanwhile, temperatures will top out a few degrees above normal both days with mostly sunny skies expected. .LONG TERM...Friday through next Wednesday The low off the California coast will continue to advect moisture into the forecast area on Friday and into the weekend. Recent model guidance has shown moisture struggling to move up the Colorado River Valley and into the forecast area compared to previous model runs. Likewise, the NBM has been on a downward trend with POPs over the past few runs, limiting their spatial extent and magnitude. Friday and Saturday have the greatest chances for precipitation, mainly over high terrain in southern Nevada, northwest Arizona, and eastern San Bernardino County. Moisture starts to decrease on Sunday into next week as the flow pattern shifts to the southwest and draws drier air into the area. Temperatures remain several degrees above normal over Labor Day Weekend and into next week. && .AVIATION...For Harry Reid...Light and variable winds this morning may briefly become east to southeast by early afternoon before turning southerly by 21Z. There is still some uncertainty on whether a pronounced east wind will develop or if winds will remain more variable. However, regardless of the direction, speeds should remain 8 knots or less through mid-afternoon. After that, a more pronounced south to south-southwest wind will develop. Speeds should generally remain around 10kts, but there is a 60 to 70 percent chance of seeing a gust of 15 to 20 knots between 21Z and 03Z. Light westerly winds will continue overnight into Thursday morning. VFR conditions will prevail through the TAF period, although a few mid-level clouds with bases above 12kft AGL may develop over the higher terrain south of the field during the afternoon. For the rest of southern Nevada, northwest Arizona and southeast California...Typical diurnal winds will continue across the region once again today. At KBIH, northerly winds this morning will turn southerly after 19Z and remain from that direction until turning back to the north after sunset. Winds at KDAG will initially be westerly this morning, but north-to-northeast winds are likely for a few hours during the afternoon before returning back to the west and becoming gusty around 00Z. In the lower Colorado River Valley, light north winds can be expected into the early afternoon before turning southerly after 19Z. VFR conditions are expected at all sites through the TAF period, with only a few clouds with bases AOA 12kft AGL expected across the higher terrain of northwest Arizona and far southern Nevada..Pleasant conditions with light winds and near to slightly above normal temperatures expected through Thursday.
