A band of snow of developed during the morning hours on December 9th over the Palmer Divide. Even though snowfall was light, pavement and air temperatures were the right combination for snowfall to melt on paved surfaces and then freeze. This produced very slippery roads, which resulting car accidents and long traffic delays. A more organized area of snow fell during the late afternoon and evening hours of the 9th. Again the snow melted and then froze to the roadways creating very slippery conditions. Between 5 p.m. Monday and 9 a.m. Tuesday, Denver Police responded to 150 crashes nearly triple the 57 crashes reported during the same timeframe earlier this week when the roads were dry.

Generally 1 to 4 inches of snow fell across the area. Here are some received reports, Sedalia 6.8 S 3.5 inches, Castle Rock 8.6 SSE 3.2 inches, and Castle Pines 2.8 ENE 1.8 inches. I-25 became congested with traffic due to accidents and slow travel during the morning and afternoon peak traffic times.

There we no reports of increased accidents or traffic issues, though there were likely some given the melting and refreezing of snow on roadways. Snowfall amounts ranged 3 to 7 inches. Snowfall amounts ranged from zero over the north in Longmont to 4-5 inches south in Golden and Lakewood. Roads became very slippery resulting in slow traffic and accidents. Here are a few snowfall reports, Littleton 6.4 W 5.0 inches, Golden 1.2 NW 4.1 inches, and Arvada 1.4 NNW 1.8 inches.

Even though only an inch or two fell in Denver. Roads became very slippery causing numerous accidents. Between 5 p.m. Monday and 9 a.m. Tuesday, Denver Police responded to 150 crashes nearly triple the 57 crashes reported during the same timeframe earlier this week when the roads were dry. Lakewood police reported 15 crashes in the same period, more than double their usual seven on a non-icy night.
