.SYNOPSIS...
A weak surface trough will become established across parts of
our region today well ahead of a cold front. The cold front is
forecast to arrive during Friday before stalling in our region
over the weekend, then this front finally shifts offshore during
early next week. Another cold front looks to arrive later
Wednesday.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH FRIDAY/...
While the mid and upper-level ridge of high pressure responsible
for our heat wave this week has shifted offshore, today turned
out to be the hottest day overall for most of our area.
Some sites near the urban corridor including PHL topped out
near 97F. The heat advisory remains in effect until 8 PM. With
a bit more cloud cover, slightly lower temperatures, and perhaps
an earlier start for developing convection, have elected not to
issue another Heat Advisory for tomorrow as most, if not
everyone, will see heat index values less than 100F. Will let
the night shift make the final call on that for now.
A Severe Thunderstorm Watch is in effect in our area, mainly
northwest of I-95, through 9 PM this evening. Activity is
winding down right now as we stabilize a bit, but seeing some
showers and thunderstorms in areas north and west of the I-95
corridor. These will continue for the next few hours before
falling apart, with only scattered showers possible into the
early morning hours. Some patchy fog may develop in areas where
it rained, with another muggy night ahead. Marine layer stratus
and perhaps a bit of fog may push onto the NJ shore toward
morning as well.
For Friday, expect a mainly dry start to the day with showers
and thunderstorms developing toward midday or early afternoon as
another shortwave passes by in the south-southwest flow aloft,
while the main cold front slowly begins to approach our region
from west of the Appalachians. With more in the way of clouds
around and subsequently lower temperatures and low-level
heating, CAPE may be more limited than it is today, and the
shortwave does not look quite as strong as the one passing
through on Thursday. That said, overall the environment looks
very similar, and SPC has portions of our area in another Slight
Risk for Severe Thunderstorms, with the main threat being
damaging winds. Hi-res guidance seems to indicate storms will
develop locally possibly as early as midday, perhaps near or
just northwest of I-95, then gradually drift southeastward.
There may be more of a heavy rain and localized flooding threat
compared to today, particularly if any storms persist in urban
areas.

.SHORT TERM /FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY/...
Overall, the short term forecast remains on track. Conditions are
still expected to be a little cooler Saturday however still humid
with some showers and thunderstorms. As an upper- level trough
remains to our west, a weak cold front will be moving through our
region Friday night before stalling across our region into Saturday.
Convection from daytime Friday should tend to be on a downward trend
Friday night as the boundary layer cools and some areas become
worked over assuming some more organized convection occurs.
There may be a repeat performance on Saturday, although temperatures
will be a bit cooler and therefore the instability is forecast to be
lower. In addition the shear looks a little less, however ample
boundary layer heating should lead to steepening low-level lapse
rates once again. This would still support some convectively
generated strong surface wind gusts if strong enough convection
develops and especially if it organizes some. In addition, the
precipitable water values will be in the 1.5-2 inch range through
Saturday and therefore convection will produce locally heavy rain.
We can certainly use the rain as it has been dry, therefore the
overall flash flood risk may be more limited unless training of
convection occurs.
With the boundary beginning to move through the region and continued
cloud cover, high temperatures Saturday are forecast to be in the
mid to upper 80s for most locations.

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY NIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY/...
Summary...Cooling temperatures and gradually lowering dew points
along with continued chances for some showers and thunderstorms
(potentially drier Tuesday).
Synoptic Overview...The axis of an upper-level trough initially to
our west is forecast to work across our area during Monday and
gradually weaken. A much stronger upper-level trough is forecast to
move across the Great Lakes region and adjacent Canada early in the
week before gradually shifting into the Northeast. The timing of
this feature will depend on the amplitude of it and if it closes off
or not. At the surface, a weak cold front draped across our region
Sunday into Monday is forecast to finally get pushed offshore into
Tuesday. The next cold front looks to arrive later Wednesday with a
reinforcing front possible on Thursday.
For Sunday and Monday...The axis of a gradually weakening upper-
level trough is forecast to arrive later Sunday and then cross our
region Monday. This will keep a weak surface front draped nearly
north to south across our area. Given some cooling aloft and some
additional forcing for ascent with the trough aloft, some increase
in convective development should occur each day especially in the
afternoon and early evening hours. While there will cooler
temperatures it will remain humid, however the instability will be
held down some which should mostly lower the severe thunderstorm
risk. Locally very heavy rain will be probable due to high
precipitable water values and potentially slower storm motions,
however the region needs the rain and this could limit the flash
flooding threat.
For Tuesday through Thursday...The weak cold front should be
offshore to start Tuesday with some drier air working in. This may
provide a window for no convection chances, however the next upper-
level trough working across the Great Lakes and toward the Northeast
will drive a cold front into our area later Wednesday with another
front possibly developing in its wake for Thursday. The details with
this front and the extent of convection will depend on the amplitude
and timing of the trough and associated surface cold front. The
surface dew points should lower some more Tuesday but then may creep
upward some Wednesday ahead of the next cold front.
We will continue to monitor Hurricane Lee, however the exact track
is uncertain so far out in time and therefore so are any possible
direct impacts. Increasing swells and rip currents into our area
however do look to become more likely with time.

.AVIATION /00Z FRIDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG,
KILG, KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas.
Tonight...Have removed mention of thunderstorms in the I-95 TAFs
for now as it looks like the bulk of the activity will miss
these terminals to the north and west. Will mainly be VFR though
some patchy fog and perhaps some stratus could work its way to
some terminals late tonight. Have kept KPHL VFR, but brought
KILG/KPNE/KTTN to a small period of MVFR between 09z-14z. For
KABE/KRDG, thunderstorms remain in the area and could move over
the terminals over the next few hours. Patchy fog and stratus
possible late. KMIV/KACY look to stay dry but some of the
guidance brings some marine stratus onshore, with some patchy
fog as well. Winds favoring a southerly direction around 5 kt or
less though variable directions possible at times. Moderate
Confidence.
Friday...VFR initially along most of the I-95 corridor, but
outside of that expect some patchy low clouds and fog with
conditions as low as IFR possible in some spots. Showers and
thunderstorms develop midday or early afternoon, by 18Z, and may
impact much of the area, but mainly inland from the coast.
Periods of MVFR ceilings and MVFR/IFR VSBY possible in/near any
thunderstorms, with locally gusty and erratic winds possible.
Winds prevailing out of the south/southwest around 5-10 kt. Low
confidence.
Outlook...
Saturday and Sunday...Periods of sub-VFR conditions probable along
some showers and thunderstorms. Greatest chance for showers and
thunderstorms is each afternoon and evening. Southerly winds 5-10
knots each day decreasing to 5 knots or less each night. Low
confidence.
Monday...Periods of sub-VFR conditions probable especially with some
showers and thunderstorms. Southwest to westerly winds 5-10 knots,
becoming northwesterly around 5 knots or less Monday night. Low
confidence.
Tuesday...Mainly VFR. Sub-VFR conditions possible with chances for
showers. Northerly winds around 5 to 10 kts. Moderate
confidence.

Conditions will remain below Small Craft Advisory criteria
through Friday. Winds S-SE 10 to 15 knots for this afternoon,
diminishing near shore and over DE Bay tonight, but otherwise
persisting into Friday. Waves on our ocean waters are expected
to be 2 to 3 feet, with waves on Delaware Bay at 2 feet or less.
Outlook...
Saturday through Monday...No marine headlines expected. Main concern
will be for showers/storms, though best coverage looks to stay
inland away from the waters. Winds generally southerly 10-15 kts.
Seas 2 to 4 ft.
Tuesday...Small Craft Advisory conditions possible. Seas begin to
build and may begin to approach 5 feet on Tuesday. Otherwise,
northerly winds around 10 knots.
Rip Currents...
A southwest wind 5 to 10 MPH this morning is forecast to become
south 10 to 15 MPH this afternoon along the coasts of Delaware
and New Jersey. Breaking waves are expected to be 1 to 2 feet
with a long period (around 10 second) easterly swell. We will
continue to carry a LOW risk for rip currents today.
A southerly wind is expected to increase to 10 to 15 MPH on
Friday with breaking waves of 1 to 2 feet. A long period
easterly swell (around 11 or 12 seconds) is forecast. Being that
conditions will likely be similar to those of today, we will
keep the mention of a LOW risk of rip currents.
