If not for an active jet stream and periodic mid level shortwaves moving across aloft, my temperatures would be colder at night and warmer in the afternoon. However, a persistent high cloud canopy will keep us insulated from radiative processes at night, while diminishing our insolation during the diurnal hours despite the continuing low level warm advection. The latest 00z FWD sounding has a lot of moisture above 500mb or 18-20 kft, then extreme dry air from that level to the surface. Don't let the widespread high clouds fool you into think rain is coming. It's not with the heavy duty, extremely warm and dry elevated mixed layer (cap) aloft. If a drop of rain can survive that layer, then I need to find a new occupation immediately. :) Highs made it well into the 60s this afternoon with winds ranging already from near calm to south or southeast around 10 mph. Winds should be light south-southwest overnight with lows Tuesday falling into the mid to upper 30s, though a few readings in the lower 40s will be likely within the immediate heat island of the cities in the DFW Metro. Some spotty sunshine may return across the north or northwest half of the forecast area Wednesday with highs ranging from the mid-upper 60s across eastern Central TX where high clouds linger the longest, to between 70 to 75 degrees from DFW west toward our Big Country counties. More rounds of mid-high clouds Tuesday night will combine with southerly winds up to 10 mph for lows in the upper 30s and lower 40s areawide. Almost balmy considering what we experienced just last week and much of February. 05/Marty && .LONG TERM... /Issued 1247 PM CST Mon Feb 28 2022/ /Tuesday Night through the Weekend/ Warm and quiet weather is expected during the workweek with an unsettled pattern arriving this weekend and early next week. A very dry airmass will remain planted over the region until the late parts of this week. Temperatures will get progressively warmer each day, most notable in the overnight lows since passing mid/upper clouds Tuesday and Wednesday could regulate afternoon heating some. Thursday should be the warmest day of the workweek as warm advection ramps up with minimal cloud cover and the highest moisture remaining near the Gulf Coast. Increased moisture (and stratus) will overspread the region Thursday night into Friday, making the end of the week feel like a typical mild spring day. This weekend's weather could be interesting with the NAEFS/ECMWF ensemble guidance pointing toward a few days of unsettled weather. The deterministic globals indicate a dryline intrusion both Saturday and Sunday ahead of a cold frontal passage early next week. Instability progs are weak (particularly Saturday), however if moist-sector dew points climb into the mid 60s, there would be sufficient instability for thunderstorm development depending on the alignment of other ingredients. The severe potential will be largely dependent on mesoscale features, so it's too soon to begin advertising a severe threat at this time. We'll be watching the evolution of the weekend pattern closely in the coming days. Warmer weather in March certainly begs the question...will we get another freeze? Probabilistic ensemble guidance indicates there's about a 15% chance of another freeze for DFW next week and about a 30-40% chance for those NW of DFW. Those probabilities seem low, but to get 40+% of ensemble members aligning beyond 7 days is statistically meaningful. Bonnette && .AVIATION... /NEW/ /00z TAFs/ Concerns: None. Southerly surface winds less than 10 kts continue through Tuesday with a broad and slack pressure gradient just W/NW of the surface high center. N-Central TX terminals will remain downstream from a low amplitude, mid level ridge aloft. WNW flow will be active with several shortwaves moving over the area.
