What happened

The episode as NWS LUB wrote it up.

Very hot temperatures on the afternoon of the eighth allowed for isolated thunderstorms to develop on the South Plains. Thunderstorms initially developed on an outflow boundary draped across the extreme southern Texas Panhandle that developed from early morning thunderstorms in the Texas Panhandle. A relatively dry sub-cloud layer enhanced the downburst potential of these storms. A few of these storms were able to produce severe wind gusts.

.SHORT TERM...
An outflow boundary from early morning showers and thunderstorms
across the southern Texas Panhandle has moved unexpectedly southward
to near a Guthrie to Andrews line as of early afternoon. Little
additional southward momentum is noted, but this boundary might
serve as the focus for isolated showers/storms across the southern
Rolling Plains later this afternoon. Otherwise, the focus for late
afternoon through evening is on the potential for another round of
air-mass type thunderstorms in a weakly forced, weakly capped air
mass in place across the forecast area with a preference toward the
deeper monsoonal moisture extending from east-central New Mexico to
the southern Panhandle.

For Saturday diurnal storm chances shift southward, focusing on the
southwestern half of the forecast area. Upper level high pressure
centered over the eastern half of the 4-corners region is already
expanding eastward and slightly northward as is evident on water
vapor imagery and in line with models progs. This eastward
expansion over the central High Plains and the Panhandle will
force the monsoonal moisture southward tonight into Saturday, thus
shifting the focus for convective initiation to south for
tomorrow afternoon. Temperatures might be a touch less hot as deep
northeast to east flow develops across the forecast area on the
south side of the upper ridge.

.LONG TERM...
Hot and dry weather is expected on Sunday into Monday with little in
the way of wind as the 598 dam sub-tropical ridge drifts westward
and centers over the region. A shortwave trough is forecast to
rotate over the Medicine Line/49th parallel on Monday with an
attendant cold front surging southward across the Great Plains,
moving into the CWA by late Monday night into Tuesday morning. Weak
baroclinity associated with the front will decrease temperatures by
5-10 deg F on Tuesday compared to Monday (particularly across the
northwestern zones), and highs were adjusted a few degrees lower to
be more in line with MOS guidance than what was generated by the NBM
given the easterly breeze. With the sub-tropical ridge continuing to
translate westward and centering over the Great Basin by Tuesday,
the presence of the easterly flow beneath northwesterly flow aloft
may result in the genesis of convection on Tuesday across the
Caprock and southern TX PH. The easterly component to the low-level
flow in wake of the weakening cold front will maintain a reservoir
of high precipitable water content generally between 1.20-1.40", as
the front fails to scour out the high quality moisture ahead of it.
Low PoPs were maintained into Wednesday as northwesterly flow atop
veering/southeasterly surface and low-level flow remains in place,
and PoPs have been confined to the Caprock with better potential as
one nears the TX/NM state line. Details will become better resolved
in the forthcoming days regarding thunderstorm potential mid-week
next week. The center of the sub-tropical ridge is forecast to shift
eastward by the latter part of next week, suppressing any chance for
thunderstorms with hot and benign through the end of the forecast
period. All in all, no significant changes for the afternoon package
compared to the previous prognostications.
