Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Fort Worth TX 533 AM CDT Wed Jul 6 2022 ...New Short Term, Aviation... .SHORT TERM... /NEW/ Update: The forecast remains in good shape with only minor adjustments this update. The Heat Advisory goes into effect today through Friday for temperatures up to 105 degrees and maximum heat indices up to 110, although as stated in the long term discussion, this is not anticipated to be the end of the heat related headlines. Gordon Previous Discussion: /Through Thursday/ A hot and fairly stagnant weather pattern is ahead the next couple of days with temperatures climbing into Heat Advisory levels both Wednesday and Thursday. The ridge in place over the southeastern U.S. will remain well in control of the regions sensible weather and result in temperatures remaining 5 to 10 degrees above normal. Temperatures overnight will fall to the low 80s in the DFW Metroplex and mid/upper 70s elsewhere before climbing to triple digits areawide Wednesday. Wednesday night and Thursday will play out in similar fashion, with continued south winds at the surface 5 to 15 mph and sunny skies. Although better moisture (PWATs to 1.9") will be in place across Central and East Texas Thursday, subsidence overhead will squash any potential for precipitation for another day with any rain chances again remaining much closer to the Gulf of Mexico. While the rain-free conditions continue, the increased moisture will send peak heat indices into the 105 to 110 degree range for much of North & Central Texas during the afternoon hours Thursday. With temperatures on the rise looking into the extended, it cannot be emphasized enough to take extra precautions this week against the incessant heat. This is especially true if you or someone you know has increased vulnerability to these hazardous temperatures, such as those dealing with chronic illness or those who are pregnant, young, or elderly. Gordon && .LONG TERM... /Issued 317 AM CDT Wed Jul 6 2022/ /Friday Onward/ Strong mid/upper level ridging will remain the dominate regime for the next 7-10 days, however slight adjustments in the placement of the ridge's center will result in a few day to day changes in the forecast. The ridge center will be over the area Friday and help nudge temperatures a couple degrees higher than the days prior. The moisture transported into the region Thursday will still be lingering and result in widespread heat index values in the upper 100s with many along and east of I-35 above 110F. This should be the first day where many are expected to meet our Excessive Heat Warning criteria. The ridge will build to our west late Friday and Saturday, shifting our upper flow to become out of the northwest this weekend and early next week. This will help send a weak cold front south Saturday, but nearly no thermal gradient behind the front should keep it from advancing much further south than the Red River. This will do a couple things... first, it will veer the surface winds ahead of the front and allow for compressional warming to locally drive temperatures up ahead of the front. Second, weak confluence along the boundary will allow for very isolated showers and storms to develop in the afternoon. Large scale subsidence will have to be overcome by any burgeoning updrafts, so if storms were to develop they would be the exception instead of the norm. Rain chances are only about 10%, so we have kept mention of this potential out of our official forecast for now. Forecast highs Saturday look to be very hot, in the mid 100s for most with heat index values again climbing near and over 110. To simplify messaging, our current Heat Advisory runs through the rest of the work week. However, an Excessive Heat Watch may be issued later today for Friday and Saturday. We have decided to hold off on issuing the Watch tonight because the front could cause our temperature and heat index forecast for Saturday to be adjusted below Excessive Heat Warning criteria for some counties and therefore preclude the issuance of the warning. As confidence grows that the front will remain to our north and there will not be much precip along the front, an Excessive Heat Watch and/or Warning will be needed for parts of the area Friday and Saturday. Heat will continue Sunday and early next week, but depending on which guidance you prefer, rain chances return to the area along a stalled front. Not to be a Debbie Downer, but our forecast has sided with the drier guidance since the globals have a bias to break down ridges quicker than they actually do. That means high temperatures above 100F with heat index values between 105-115F are forecast to continue through at least Wednesday of next week. Our best hope will be that a trough over the Eastern CONUS next week deepens enough to allow a backdoor front into the area, but I wouldn't get your hopes up just yet.
