VFR conditions should prevail through much of the upcoming period
along with strong southerly winds which should veer to west-
southwesterly as a Pacific cold front arrives late this evening.
Otherwise, primary uncertainty is the potential for thunderstorms.
Probability seems just high enough to introduce mentions at
AMA/GUY with this issuance. Amendments will be issued as timing
becomes more certain or if storms fail to develop.

SHORT TERM...Today and tonight.
Southwesterly flow aloft will prevail across the Panhandles today
through this evening ahead of a closed upper low tracking east
across the Great Basin region and across the central U.S. Rockies
by tonight. The closed upper low is expected to lift north and
east into the northern Plains states by 12Z Saturday. Main upper
support from the approaching upper system will begin to impact the
forecast area by 21Z today to 00Z Saturday with convection
developing over the far western Panhandles and then increasing in
coverage and intensity as the convection moves eastward during the
evening hours. The main severe weather threat from the convection
is expected to be from about 21Z to 22Z today until around 06Z
Saturday, although convection will linger through most of the
overnight hours tonight.
Surface low over Colorado with a dryline extending south across
the eastern Plains of New Mexico today will mix toward the New
Mexico state line by 00Z to 03Z Saturday. The surface low to track
east into Kansas tonight with the dryline continuing to mix east
across the forecast area to either along or off the Caprock over
the eastern Panhandles or near the Oklahoma state line by 12Z
Saturday.

FIRE WEATHER...Today.
With the dryline remaining west of the Panhandles in eastern New
Mexico all day today until around mid evening, decided to hold off
on upgrading the Fire Weather Weather Watch and instead focus on
elevated fire weather conditions for the extreme western Panhandles
near to the state line with New Mexico. Gulf moisture surging
west and north should keep minimum relative humidity values of 20
to 30 percent across the far western Panhandles except for
humidity values as low as 12 to 15 percent near Kenton Oklahoma in
the very far northwest portions of Cimarron County. Will issue a
RFD for the western Panhandles today and emphasize on the extreme
western parts of the counties from Cimarron to Deaf Smith reaching
elevated conditions.

LONG TERM...Saturday through Thursday.
A return to dry weather is anticipated for Saturday through
Thursday as the residual upper level trof slides east of the area
and is replaced by an upper level ridge of high pressure which
slowly migrates eastward to the plains states by Monday night and
remains in the vicinity through Thursday. The one exception to
the completely dry forecast is over the far northwest sections
Sunday night as the residual upper level trof moves across the
southern high plains. This feature could generate precipitation
over the higher terrain over southern CO and northern NM Sunday
and Sunday night, with some of that spilling into the far
northwest zones Sunday night in the form of light rain showers.
NBM slight chance to low end chance pops seem to capture this
scenario and were utilized in the pop grids for Sunday night.
After a gradual cool down Saturday through Monday, temperatures
are expected to rise to above normal values during the middle to
latter part of next week.

For Saturday, any elevated to critical fire weather conditions
will be highly dependent on where and how much rainfall occurs
late this afternoon and tonight. These details should become
better defined later this afternoon and tonight.
For Tuesday and Wednesday, elevated to possibly critical fire
weather conditions may develop across western and northwestern
sections of the area.
For Thursday, elevated to possibly critical fire weather conditions
may develop across western and central sections of the Oklahoma
and Texas Panhandles.
