.PREV DISCUSSION... /issued 545 PM AST Sun Jul 31 2022/

SYNOPSIS...

Generally fair weather conditions and hazy skies will remain for
early next week with above normal heat indices expected each
afternoon. A seasonal weather pattern is expected with limited
shower activity during the morning hours for the east and shower
activity during the afternoon hours for western Puerto Rico. Shower
and thunderstorm activity will increase by Tuesday and into
Wednesday due to a surface induced trough and further increase by
Saturday when a tropical waves crosses the forecast area. For
tonight, there will be a high rip current risk for the northwest
and north-central beaches of Puerto Rico.

SHORT TERM...Tonight through Tuesday...

Generally fair weather, hazy skies and high heat indices were the
main weather events today to end the month of July. Generally fair
weather was observed today with most shower activity in the forecast
area occurring during the afternoon hours in western/northwestern
Puerto Rico along with brief showers during the morning hours in
eastern/northern Puerto Rico. A Saharan Air Layer (SAL) currently
present in our region promoted hazy skies and should continue to
do so for tonight and most of the short term period. Precipitable
water values currently range from around 1.50 inches to around
1.60 inches, staying at or slightly below normal values for this
time of the year. Precipitable water values values should remain
from normal to slightly below normal for the rest of the short
term forecast period. A limited seasonal pattern will be observed
during at least through Monday with limited shower activity during
the overnight and early morning hours for eastern Puerto Rico and
shower activity during the afternoon hours over western Puerto
Rico due to diurnal and local effects. Models currently show cool
500mb temperatures of peaking at around -8C during Monday
afternoon, isolated thunderstorms are possible along with any
shower activity that could form during those hours over western
Puerto Rico. Heat indices of above 100 degrees Fahrenheit are
also posible on Monday, especially over northcentral and western
Puerto Rico. By late Monday and into Tuesday a surface induced
trough, promoted by a TUTT close to the area, will increase
moisture and possible shower activity and isolated thunderstorms,
especially on Tuesday afternoon through the end of the short term
period.

LONG TERM...Wednesday through Sunday...

FROM PREV DISCUSSION... /issued 504 AM AST Sun Jul 31 2022/

Based on the most recent model guidance, the weather scenario
expected in the long-term forecast cycle remains unchanged, with
the following features influencing the local weather conditions;
surface-induced trough through Wednesday, followed by a weak
tropical wave on Thursday, and yet another tropical wave on
Saturday into Sunday. Each feature will enhance shower and
possible thunderstorm activity across the area, producing
measurable rainfall. Still, it is not until the second and broader
tropical wave reaches the region, causing precipitable water
values to rise above 2.0 inches, that there may be a potential for
minor flooding. In the meantime, localized moderate to heavy rains
could lead to ponding of water on roadways and poorly drained
areas, even during periods with relatively drier air streaming
across the region. A high surface pressure meandering across the
north Atlantic Ocean will maintain a generally easterly wind flow
at 10-20 mph, but the above features will cause winds to vary
briefly in intensity and direction. Changes in the general wind
flow will also alter daytime maximum temperatures, but highs will
still peak into the upper 80s to around 90 degrees, with heat
indices into the lower to mid 100s each afternoon.

AVIATION...VFR conds expected. HZ is occurring but VIS is P6SM.
Winds from the east at 15-20KT with gusts through 31/22Z, gradually
decreasing thereafter to around 10KT through the night. VCSH/VCTS
possible near TJBQ between 31/18-21Z.

MARINE...Moderate to locally fresh easterly winds will maintain
choppy marine conditions. Marine conditions are forecast to
gradually improve over the next few days, but will remain choppy
for the offshore waters at least through tomorrow. For tonight,
there will be a high rip current risk for the northwest and
north-central beaches of Puerto Rico. A moderate risk will be in
effect for most other beaches of Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin
islands, except for the beaches from southern Rincon to Boqueron,
which have a low risk of rip currents.
