.SYNOPSIS...
A cold front will race offshore late this evening. Weak high
pressure will remain in place through the middle of the week with
two coastal low pressure systems passing southeast of the area, one
Wednesday and another late Thursday. A much stronger area of low
pressure will develop across the Mid-Atlantic Friday night and pass
into New England on Saturday. A strong cold front is expected to
cross the region in the wake of the surface low Saturday morning,
then strong high pressure will build to our southwest into Sunday
then pass offshore into Monday.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TUESDAY/...
With the convective line holding together and MUCAPE values of
several hundred J/kg, went ahead and issued a Severe
Thunderstorm Watch for the northern half of the area after
coordinating with SPC and surrounding offices. Though
instability isn't anything to write home about, the strong
synoptic-scale forcing along the front and with the LL jet ahead
of the front will be enough to mix down stronger winds with the
stronger portions of the line as it moves into the region.
Timing takes the line into our CWA in Berks and Carbon Counties
around 7:30-8pm then around 9 pm in Philadelphia, proceeding
off the coast by 10:30-11 pm. There have been numerous damage
reports upstream into central Pennsylvania with gusts up to 60
mph.

A strong southwest flow ahead of an approaching cold front brought
very warm temperatures to our region this afternoon, under mainly
mid and high level clouds.

Isolated thunder is possible due to the strength of the system and a
bit of elevated instability. Precipitable water values are forecast
to increase near 1.5 inches in the vicinity of the cold front. A
brief period of heavy rain will likely occur, especially in the
upslope areas of eastern Pennsylvania and northern New Jersey.
However, its duration should not result in more than some localized
flooding in areas of poor drainage.

A significant concern for this evening continues to be the wind. A
Wind Advisory remains in effect for our entire forecast area until
1:00 AM Tuesday. Any moderate to heavy rain showers could mix very
strong (60+ MPH) wind gusts to the surface.

The precipitation is expected to come to an end once the front
passes and the wind will shift to the west and northwest. It should
diminish a bit overnight. Brisk cold advection is anticipated.

Tuesday will likely be dry and seasonable with some high clouds
overhead due to the presence of an upper level jet. Highs are
forecast to range from around 40 on the Pocono Plateau to the lower
50s on the coastal plain. The wind should be from the northwest at
10 to 15 MPH gusting to 20 to 25 MPH.

.SHORT TERM /TUESDAY NIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY NIGHT/...
Synoptic Overview:

Synoptically speaking, the Tuesday night through Thursday night
period is pretty uninteresting. Mid-level flow will be quasi-zonal
through this period with one primary shortwave trough propagating
through on Wednesday. This will be an opening/decaying/ejecting wave
that is currently located across the southwest CONUS. The Thursday
shortwave trough has trended much more surpressed and flatter in the
latest guidance suite, and thus appears more likely to remain south
of the region passing offshore of the Carolinas on Thursday. At the
surface, weak and broad high pressure will generally dominate the
pattern, but this will be interrupted briefly by low pressure
sliding from the interior Southeastern CONUS and offshore of coastal
Virgina while intensifying to some degree along a remnant baroclinic
zone (the remnants of the cold front moving offshore tonight).
Surface ridging will then return through Thursday night with a
weaker surface low developing well offshore related to the
aforementioned flat mid-level wave.

Sensible Weather Details:

Tuesday night through Wednesday...As the aforementioned surface low
passes offshore to our south late Tuesday night into early
Wednesday, precipitation is expected to spread into the area from
south to north. As expected, the guidance has begun to trend farther
northwest with the extent of measurable precipitation across the
region. The precipitation should start as mostly snow or a rain/snow
mix away from the coasts. At time progresses, the rain/mix line
should progress inland, but I don't expect it full reach the I-95
corridor. The setup is favorable for the development of a
frontogenetic band of more enhanced precipitation as the mid-level
wave axis passes over the area during the daytime hours. The heavier
precipitation will result in dynamic cooling in the thermal layer
near freezing (which would otherwise begin melting snow into rain),
so I tend to think we'll see more snow than rain in the urban
corridor.

Given the widespread steady precipitation, overcast, and light
northeast surface flow, I have lowered temperatures for the daytime
Wednesday, although they may need to come down even lower in future
forecast updates. Temperatures will likely struggle to reach 40
degrees across much of the area, possibly struggling to reach 35
degrees northwest of I-95. With that said, surface wet-bulb
temperatures will be pretty marginal for accumulating snow,
especially near the I-95 corridor. Slightly lower wetbulbs farther
northwest into the I-78 corridor may be a little more favorable for
more appreciable accumulations, but in any case, think we'll likely
struggle to see much in the way of travel impacts with road
temperatures quite warm given the recent warm weather. The snow
would also be falling during the daytime. A coating to 2 inches of
snow is still possible, mainly in grassy areas northwest of I-95.

Precipitation is expected to be all rain or snow with little to no
sleet or freezing rain expected. This is owing to a lack of any
notable cold air damming at the surface and no strong warm advection
just above the surface. What all of this means for sensible forecast
impacts is higher PoPs and higher QPF across the board. This also
includes slightly higher snowfall amounts than what was previously
forecast.

Wednesday night through Thursday night: As the Wednesday system
moves out to sea, overall benign and seasonable conditions will
prevail. Skies should remain mostly cloudy through the period though
with the system to our south pumping in mid-level cloud layers. The
surface flow will remain from the northeast around 5-10 mph. A few
rain showers are possible during the daytime hours, main south/east
of the Philly metro, as the flat mid-level wave and associated
surface low pass offshore to our south.

.LONG TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
The next system to watch will impact the region Friday night through
Saturday after another seasonable, but mostly cloudy Friday. An
amplifying trough axis will pass across the Ohio Valley into
Saturday. An impressive mid-level jet will develop (>130 kts) as the
trough nears the region. A resulting surface low will intensify
rapidly as it moves northward (inland) across the Mid-Atlantic
region Friday night and into New England on Saturday. The surface
low will likely deepen to sub-970 mb levels into eastern Quebec. A
strong cold front will follow the low pressure's passage and should
be offshore into the afternoon. A period of fairly robust warm
advection should accompany the low, so temperatures will briefly
warm to above normal during the Saturday morning hours.

The main sensible weather impacts from this system will be
widespread moderate to possibly locally heavy rainfall and potential
for strong gradient winds (especially behind the cold front). The
heaviest/steadiest rain looks to fall late Friday night through
Saturday morning. West to northwest winds gusts in the 30-40 mph
range are likely, with gusts of 40-50 mph possible Saturday
afternoon and evening.

Much colder (and drier) air will continue advecting into the region
Saturday night into Sunday as the surface high builds to our
southwest. After a cold Saturday night and Sunday, temperatures
should rebound to near normal levels into early next week.

.AVIATION /00Z TUESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG, KILG,
KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas.

Tonight...Showers until about 04Z will be accompanied by
MVFR/IFR conditions. Otherwise, VFR for tonight. A cold front is
forecast to sweep from west to east across the TAF sites
between about 01Z and 03Z resulting in a wind shift from the
southwest to the west and northwest. Speeds of 15 to 20 knots
with gusts near 36 knots are expected. The wind speeds should
diminish slightly overnight. High confidence.

Tuesday...VFR. Northwest wind 10 to 15 knots with gusts of 20 to 25
knots. High confidence.

Outlook...

Tuesday night and Wednesday...Conditions should start VFR, but
ceilings are expected to lower to MVFR and possibly even IFR
near day break. Visibility restrictions are likely as well
during the day due to rain and snow (mostly rain and MIV/ACY).
Winds mostly light and variable, though a period of easterly
winds of 5 to 10 kt is anticipated during the day Wednesday.
Moderate confidence on the overall pattern, low confidence on
details.

Wednesday night...Conditions returning to VFR through the
evening. Northerly winds 5 kts or less. Moderate confidence.

Thursday through Friday...Predominantly VFR conditions are
expected. However, a period of MVFR ceilings and visibility
restrictions will be possible along with a slight chance of rain
showers. Low confidence on the timing of when this will occur.
Northeasterly wind 5 to 10 kt, becoming southeasterly later
Friday. Low confidence.

Friday night and Saturday...MVFR to IFR ceiling and visibility
restrictions likely Friday night into Saturday morning as a
warm front lifts through the area. Widespread moderate rain is
expected during this period as well. Southeasterly winds will
become more southerly around 5-10 kts with southwesterly LLWS
likely. The winds will continue to increase and shift west to
northwesterly behind a cold front by late Saturday morning. By
Saturday afternoon and evening, winds will be sustained around
20 kts with gusts around 30 kts. The late morning cold front
should also scatter out any ceiling and visibility restrictions
and bring an end to the rain. Moderate confidence on the overall
pattern, low confidence on details.

.MARINE...
A fog bank worked its way northward over the waters off New Jersey
this afternoon. It should continue to dissipate and move away from
our region into this evening.

A Small Craft Advisory remains in effect until 10:00 AM Tuesday on
Delaware Bay, and until 1:00 PM Tuesday on our ocean waters. A
strong cold front is expected to pass eastward across our coastal
waters between about 9:00 PM and 11:00 PM. Th wind direction is
forecast to shift from southwest to the west and northwest at that
time.

The northwest wind is anticipated to decrease gradually on Tuesday.

Outlook...

Tuesday night through Thursday...Winds and seas should stay
below SCA criteria. Winds east to northeast 5-15 kts with
occasional gusts up to 20 kts near and south of Cape May.

Friday...Winds and seas should mostly stay below SCA criteria,
though on the coastal waters seas could approach 5 ft especially
late in the day. Easterly winds 5-10 kts.

Friday night and Saturday...SCA conditions likely developing
Friday night with gale force wind gusts likely on Saturday.
Southerly winds will increase to 15-20 kts Friday night with
gusts of 25-30 kts possible. Seas building to 4-6 feet by
daybreak Saturday along with widespread rain and fog. On
Saturday, winds will shift west to northwesterly and increase to
25-30 kts with gusts up to 40 kts possible. Seas building to
6-9 feet. Winds and seas will slowly diminish Saturday night.
