Penny-size hail reported about two-miles ESE of Painesville.
A lake-aggregate surface trough resided over the Great Lakes and vicinity during the evening of the 17th through wee hours of the 18th. This trough resulted from the expansion of relatively-warm lake-modified air as a cold air mass crossed the relatively-warm lakes and was warmed and moistened from beneath.

Deaths and injuries are direct and indirect together, as the offices filed them. Damage is property and crops in the dollars of the year, not adjusted for inflation, and only where an office estimated it.
The episode as NWS CLE wrote it up.
An embedded and occluded surface low meandered over Lake Huron. During the late evening of the 17th through early morning of the 18th, a cyclonically-curved west-northwesterly mean low-level flow of cold air over and downwind of Lake Erie and appreciable lake-induced CAPE triggered multiple bands of lake-effect rain and graupel that targeted much of northeast OH and northwest PA. A stronger updraft associated with one of the heavier lake-effect showers managed to produce hail up to penny-size in the Painesville area in Lake County, OH.
The local office's own words before the first event, as it sent them, from the Iowa Environmental Mesonet's archive of National Weather Service text.
NWS Cleveland, OH wrote its last area forecast discussion before the first event at Oct 17, 10:07 PM EST, 19 minutes earlier.
