Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Grand Forks ND 1013 PM CDT Thu Jun 23 2022 .UPDATE... Issued at 1011 PM CDT Thu Jun 23 2022 Weak line of storms developed across Otter Tail county then quickly weakened with the lost of daytime heating and better forcing to the east. Attention now turns to the northern border where there is a strong and possibly severe storm Langdon on the Canadian side of the border. Will continue to monitor this area for storm or warning potential if this little supercell crosses into ND. UPDATE Issued at 710 PM CDT Thu Jun 23 2022 Severe weather watch is in effect for Grant, Otter Tail and Wadena counties this evening with ML CAPE up to 2000J/kg along and south of the boundary with weak wave moving along the zonal flow aloft. Coverage is not expected to be widespread with isolated severe storm possible. Another area of convection to the west in central ND near Minot may hold together and bring some activity into the DVL basin and northern RRV late this evening into the overnight. With weaker instability and shear severe storms are not expected. && .SHORT TERM...(This evening through Friday night) Issued at 150 PM CDT Thu Jun 23 2022 Overview... Trough translates across the northern plains through the end of the work week bringing chances for isolated to scattered severe thunderstorms. Areas of concern for today are south and east of Fargo toward Bemidji, while tomorrow is eastern ND and NW Minnesota. Impacts are possible from large hail and damaging winds today and tomorrow. With the addition of the chance for possible tornadoes and localized flash flooding for tomorrow late afternoon through the evening hours. This Evening/Tonight... A trough continues to move into the northern plains this evening, with boundary situated across the ND/SD border into West Central MN. Along this boundary is a sharp contrast between moisture, with the low 60s dewpoints north and lower 70s south. CAMs continue to indicate thunderstorm development along that frontal boundary during the later evening hours and into the overnight. Shear has improved toward 35kts in the lower to mid levels, with moisture content remaining high south of the boundary. Instability remains high in the region especially along the ND/SD border, with MUCAPE approaching 3000-3500 J/kg thanks to all the daytime heating. It doesn't take much for the storms to develop and quickly form. Guidance shows development along the boundary this evening, with the potential for back building storms at times through the overnight hours. This would increase the chance for higher precipitation totals and localized flash flooding. With high CAPE, DCAPE well above 1200 J/kg, sufficient moisture, steep low/mid level lapse rates, and sufficient shear we could see the probability of isolated to scattered strong to severe thunderstorms south and east of a line from Fargo toward Bemidji. Main impacts would be large hail and damaging winds, with the slight possibility of an isolated tornado. Localized flash flooding would be possible as well, since we have high PWAT values and the potential for back building thunderstorms early on. A short wave in southern Canada could also trigger some thunderstorms along the international border this evening and overnight, with small hail and gusty winds possible at times. This would be more probable towards Lake of the Woods and Flag Island. We will continue to monitor development this evening and overnight. Tomorrow... Chances for storms linger into the morning hours Friday, with general clearing as we approach the mid morning hours. The trough moves into the region by the afternoon hours, with a trailing cold front across the region. Instability grows across the region throughout the day, with strong low to mid level lapse rates. Shear continues to remain displaced from the general region, but remains around 30kts in the low to mid levels. We have learned that it doesn't take a lot of shear in a high instability environment to generate thunderstorms. As the cold front approaches the region, DCAPE reaches into the 1300- 1600 J/kg range, MUCAPE around 3500 J/kg, strong moisture surge from the Gulf of Mexico, and sufficient directional/speed shear is in place. Shear remaining around 30-35kts means different modes are possible for severe thunderstorms, with guidance suggesting clusters of storms developing around the late afternoon hours ahead of the cold front. As the front approaches the area those clusters become linear and have the potential to form more of a convective system in eastern ND and NW MN as we approach the evening and overnight hours. Before the storms become linear, some of the clusters could be supercellular at times and bring the chance for tornadoes along and north of I94. Main impacts for Friday will be winds up to 75mph, hail up to 2 inches, and the possibility of a couple tornadoes. Localized flash flooding will also be possible as we have long deep moisture in atmospheric profiles and high PWAT values across the area. Make sure you have a way to receive alerts this evening and also tomorrow for the potential for isolated to scattered severe thunderstorms. .LONG TERM...(Saturday through Thursday) Issued at 150 PM CDT Thu Jun 23 2022 Saturday through Monday...The weekend will see a cool down as an upper low moves through Manitoba and transitions the Northern Plains to northwesterly flow. Storms from Friday night will most likely be ongoing Saturday morning across western MN as the trough pulls eastward. After this initial round of precip moves into DLH's area, there will be some lingering shower activity through the rest of the weekend near the international border close to the upper low, but not much in the way of impacts expected. The upper low pulls further away by Monday, with westerly surface winds helping boost temps back up to seasonal averages in the upper 70s to low 80s. Tuesday through Thursday...The upper flow begins to transition to a more active pattern, although deterministic models are all over the place with various shortwaves. There is no consistent signal for any unusual temperature or precipitation anomalies, either in the R or M climate probabilities or any of the other ensemble data. Shower and thunderstorm activity each day as well as seasonable temps seem reasonable at this point for the mid-week period, so will keep the blended solution. && .AVIATION...(For the 00Z TAFS through 00Z Friday evening) Issued at 710 PM CDT Thu Jun 23 2022 Light winds and VFR conditions expected for all TAF sites tonight with any thunderstorm chances at or less than 20%. The Fargo/Grand Forks radar (KMVX), 162 km away, was scanning. The volume nearest the first event began at 04:08 UTC.
10 hail, 9 thunderstorm wind, 6 tornado, 3 funnel cloud. Local standard time, as filed.
Hail up to the size of quarters, along with very strong winds noted across central Walhalla township.
Dime to quarter size hail and very heavy rain was reported. Periods of hail off and on for 20 minutes.
Tornado was filmed by at least 2 individuals, one just south of Milton and one west of Milton on highway 66. It slowly tracked for about one half mile to the northeast, to around 2.5 wsw of Milton by 258 pm cdt. The tornado produced a fairly wide dust plume as it moved across and open field. Peak winds estimated to 75 mph. Maximum width to 10 yards. Videos and reports posted via social media.
Persistent wall cloud reported with possible funnel located to wnw. Spotter located near Sheyenne.
Trees were blown down near the south branch of the Park River. Time was estimated based on radar.

Resultant ground track was evident as numerous snapped boxelder and ash trees through several field shelter belts from northeast Vesta Township into southeast Tiber Township. Tornado likely tracked to the NNE for nearly 2 miles to near 3.5 WSW Edinburg by 333 pm CDT. Peak wind estimated to 90 mph. Maximum width to 100 yards.
