Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Elko NV 223 AM PDT Sun Sep 18 2022 .SYNOPSIS...A nearly stationary low pressure system off the northern California coast will bring gusty winds and warming temperatures to much central and northeastern Nevada through Tuesday. Rain showers and cooler temperatures are expected Wednesday as the low moves through the region. && .SHORT TERM...Today through Monday night. The synoptic set up is in place for a few breezy days ahead. A quasi-stationary upper-low along the NorCal coast and consistent mid-level jet over Nevada will allow for gusty winds across northeastern and especially central Nevada today, with slightly lower but still strong southerly winds Monday. Sustained south winds approaching 30 mph with gusts around 40 mph are expected this afternoon, just below advisory levels for most valleys. Some blowing dust is possible from typical alkali flat locations. Similar conditions are expected Monday with slightly lower wind speeds. Northwest Nevada and Humboldt county will be spared from the higher winds with even a slight chance for showers in far western Humboldt county through Monday. THe deep southerly flow east of the low will bring slightly warmer temperatures to the region through Monday. Highs today will range from the lower to upper 70s with a few degrees of warming Monday. Lows will drop into the 40s. .LONG TERM...Tuesday through next Saturday. Strong closed low circulation near San Francisco Bay Area Tuesday will be ejecting northeast, with the likely path crossing northwest Nevada. The GEFS show this closed low weakening quickly as it lifts across the northern Great Basin. Cluster analysis show similar solutions, with the majority keeping the eastern portion of Nevada dry. If the weakening upper low tracks farther south (along the Idaho/Nevada border), then scattered showers and isolated thunder occurs across eastern Nevada. The National Blend of Models show 15-45% chance of showers Wednesday afternoon. The chance of showers diminished Tuesday night and Wednesday, with dry weather Friday and Saturday. Behind the passing short wave, cooler air filters across the region. Many valley temperatures will be falling into the 30s Friday/Saturday morning. The coolest day appears to be Thursday with highs in the 60s north to 70s central Nevada. && .AVIATION...Expect VFR conditions to persist for the next 24 hours for all terminals. There may be some minor visibility reductions at WMC and BAM as smoke moves north, but VFR conditions are expected to prevail. Weather is to be dry at all terminals as well and the main concern will be for strong and gusty winds. The strongest winds will be focused across central Nevada, with greatest impacts at KTPH and KELY, where afternoon and evening gusts up to 35 kts are expected. Winds will subside overnight to 10-15 kts across central Nevada, however KELY will likely remain breezy with gusts around 25 kts. && .FIRE WEATHER...Elevated fire weather conditions are expected today with strong gusty south winds developing across all areas except Humboldt county where a few showers are possible in far western Humboldt county. Although winds will be elevated, relative humidity in most valleys will not reach critically low thresholds this afternoon. Gusty winds will continue Monday and Tuesday with the strongest winds expected today. A chance for rain showers returns Wednesday as the low finally pushes through the region.
