Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Las Vegas NV 927 PM PDT Wed Nov 2 2022 .SYNOPSIS...An active northern tier jet stream will lead to unsettled weather conditions at times over the next week. The first of two large systems will drop into the area tonight and Thursday with a second system forecast to impact the area for the first half of the upcoming week. Expect periods of gusty winds and increasing chances for rain and snow to go along with unseasonably cool temperatures. && UPDATE...Earlier today, the eastern Sierra Slopes as well as northern Lincoln County received their first measurable snowfall. Observed snow depths in the eastern Sierra range from 3 to 9 inches, with a 2 to 4 inches around Pioche. The Winter Weather Advisory for Lincoln County above 5000 feet remains in good shape through 11 AM Thursday as a secondary band pushes through the region tonight. The first band of light showers continues to slowly push eastward across northern Arizona this evening. Temperatures remain in the 40s and 50s ahead of the incoming cold front, so this precipitation is currently falling as light rain. Observed precipitation totals across Mohave County range from 0.04 to 0.25 inches this evening. The cold front is clearly visible at the surface with a stark temperature gradient across central Lincoln County followed by breezy northwesterly winds. No changes have been made to the forecast tonight, as it looks to be in good shape. && .PREVIOUS DISCUSSION...222 PM PDT Wed Nov 2 2022/ .DISCUSSION...Expect periods of unsettled weather conditions over the next week with two large weather systems forecast to bring impacts to the area. The first system currently over the Pacific Northwest will drop in over the area tonight and Thursday. The primary focus areas for accumulating precipitation are in Lincoln and Mohave counties. Other areas could see shower activity but precip amounts will generally be light. Elevations above 5000 feet in Lincoln County are currently under a Winter Weather Advisory that continues through 11 am Thursday. The probability of advisory level snowfall in other areas is currently too low to justify issuing any winter weather products. Locally in the Vegas area, the Spring Mountains and Sheep Range could see 1-2 inch amounts generally above 4500 feet with 3-5 inch amounts at the higher elevations above 9000 feet beginning around midnight tonight and lasting through about noon on Thursday. Only minor impacts are expected - mainly for slick roadways leading into the Spring Mountains. In Mohave County, 1-3 inch snow amounts are expected above 4500 feet with locally higher amounts possible in the higher elevations. Confidence in snow amounts remaining below advisory level is moderate-high at this time. Windy conditions are expected across the Western Mojave Desert tonight with westerly gusts 35-45 mph with northerly gusts 30-40 mph over parts of Esmeralda and central Nye counties on Thursday. The chilly conditions today will be even chillier on Thursday with high temperatures ending up 15-20 degrees below normal. The system and its insulating cloud cover will move away from the area Thursday night allowing temperatures to rapidly drop to near freezing in the Northwest Deserts of Mohave County including the Kingman area. In response, A Freeze Watch has been issued for this area beginning at midnight Thursday night through 8 am Friday. A dry northwest flow is forecast over the area on Friday and Saturday with temperatures expected to rebound about 4-5 degrees each day. Winds across most of the region will be light however, the Colorado River Valley could see some breezy north winds on Friday but they are not expected to be significant enough for any wind products. The upper flow begins to transition to more west to southwesterly in response to the next trough developing over or near the PacNW. For our area, this will continue the warming trend with high temperatures rising another 4-5 degrees. Winds are currently forecast to be light although there could be some afternoon gustiness as the lower atmosphere gets well mixed. The next system could be a slow mover resulting in several days of potential impactful weather in the Monday through Wednesday time period. Expect this broad-multiwave system to bring more gusty winds, increasing precipitation chances, and cooler temperatures. && .AVIATION...For Harry Reid...Southwest winds gusting 15-25 knots can be expected into the evening hours. A cold front will move over southern Nevada early Thursday morning then pull across northern Arizona and Utah Thursday afternoon. This will likely bring broken to overcast ceilings lowering to 5-6 kft causing mountain obscurement between 10Z and 18Z Thursday with scattered showers around the Las Vegas Valley. CIGS at the terminal should lift to AOB 10k feet by 18Z. Winds will shift and become west by 12Z and then northwest at 15-20 kts later Thursday morning. Wind speed and direction may vary considerably between 12Z and 18Z Thursday due to nearby showers. Northwest winds will persist on Friday but will be lighter at 10-15 kts. For the rest of southern Nevada, northwest Arizona and southeast California...A storm system approaching from the northwest will dive down over southern Nevada by Thursday morning then pull away across northern Arizona and Utah Thursday afternoon. This will continue producing south-southwest winds gusting 20-30 knots across much of the Mojave Desert Region and northwest Arizona into this evening while north winds generally 10-20 knots spread down over northern Inyo County and south central Nevada today. Ceilings 3-5 kft over northwest Arizona through early this evening with some light snow over elevations above 5 kft MSL causing mountain obscuration. Ceilings will lower to 3-5 kft across much of southern Nevada and again in northwest Arizona between 10Z and 18Z Thursday causing mountain obscurement with scattered to numerous rain showers and snow showers.
