Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Elko NV 258 AM PDT Sun May 8 2022 .SYNOPSIS...Rain and snow showers in northern Nevada this morning turn to all snow in the afternoon and continue into tonight. Isolated thunderstorms are expected as well. Strong winds in central Nevada today with blowing dust will reduce visibility at times. Much colder temperatures are expected today, with cold temperatures in the upper teens through the mid 20's tonight. && .SHORT TERM...Today through Monday night Long wave trof in the northwestern U.S. will continue to dig southward through the short term period bringing a mixed bag of weather: Winds and blowing dust: Strong winds expected in central Nevada today as a jet digs southward into Nevada. Wind Advisories are in effect there, though isolated High Wind Warning gusts (greater then 58 mph) are possible in northwestern Nye County this afternoon as winds turn northwest there, including around the Tonopah area, though it does not look widespread enough to warrant an upgrade. Blowing dust with reduced visibility is likely this afternoon and into the evening. As for northern Nevada, breezy westerly winds are expected today which could provide for some patchy blowing dust in spots. Much lighter winds are expected all areas on Monday. Precipitation: Showers will be on the increase early this morning and will continue into tonight before tapering off on Monday. The bulk of the precipitation will occur in northern Nevada, though some isolated showers could reach as far south as around US Hwy 50. Snow levels of 4500 to 5500 feet this morning in northern Nevada will drop to the valley floors this afternoon as colder air filters down into Nevada and will then remain on the valley floors through the short term period. The colder air aloft will provide for just enough instability to trigger some isolated thunderstorms late this morning and into the evening, which could provide for some graupel/small hail and gusty winds. Snow will start out as slushy, but then the snow ratios will start to rise later this afternoon with the colder air. Grassy areas could see 1 to 4 inches of snow in valley areas, especially in higher valleys and along the passes. Roads will start off warm, but late this afternoon through tonight could see some light accumulations as roads cool off and snow ratios rise. A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect in northern Elko County through this evening for elevations above 6500'. Scattered snow showers and maybe a thunderstorm is expected on Monday, mainly north of I-80, and little additional snow accumulation is expected. Temperatures: High temperatures will be much cooler today, mainly in the 40's in northern Nevada and the 50's and 60's in central Nevada. Lows tonight will drop into the upper teens through the mid 20's, which is much cooler than we have seen in some time. Highs on Monday will be in the mid 30's to mid 40's except for northern Nye County, where highs will be in the 50's. Cool overnight lows continue in the 20's on Monday night. .LONG TERM...Tuesday through Saturday. A long wave upper low continues to be depicted over the western United States. This means an active weather pattern is expected to continue across the silver state through the upcoming week with temperatures at or below normal. Tuesday through Thursday morning appears active as several pieces of energy rotate around the mean long wave. This will result in at least scattered shower activity across northern and central Nevada. Precipitation accumulations at this time appear on the light side as the activity will be scattered and not concentrated in one location. Highs each afternoon will be in the 50s and 60s with overnight lows in the 20s and 30s. Winds will be breezy each afternoon with some gusts into the 20s and 30 mph range. By Friday, the model simulations are showing increasing heights, though a low probability of isolated showers are possible along the border with Idaho and Oregon. Highs will be in the 60s with the possibility of low to mid 70s in central Nevada. Overnight lows will be in the 30s. An upper ridge will round out the long term, with some quieter weather possible. Highs will be in the 70s on Saturday with some afternoon breezes. && .AVIATION...Gusty winds will occur at all terminals later today. Wind gust magnitudes of 30-40 KT will be common, though some locations across the central locales could see gusts as high as 45KT. These winds will bring areas of BLDU and HZ that will be fairly widespread across Nevada. As a result, VSBY reductions are likely with temporary reductions to 3SM or less. In addition, light SHRA or a mix of light SHRASN will impact the northern sites of KEKO, KBAM, and KWMC, bringing MVFR to brief IFR conditions. -TSRA are expected this afternoon at the KEKO and KBAM terminals being the most likely to see this activity on station. The thunderstorms can cause small hail and/or ice pellets. Icing and turbulence are a concern so check the Aviation Weather Center forecast. && .FIRE WEATHER...An active weather pattern will continue across the Great Basin for the next several days. Showers and isolated thunderstorms, including accumulating snow, will be confined to northern Nevada through tonight, while central Nevada will deal with very gusty west winds, blowing dust and elevated fire weather conditions due to very low daytime relative humidity. Scattered snow showers and isolated thunderstorms are expected on Monday north of I80, though winds will be lighter across the region. Temperatures will be well below normal today through Monday before a warming trend commences Tuesday. && .LKN WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES... Winter Weather Advisory until 11 PM PDT this evening for Northern Elko County.
