Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Las Vegas NV 1232 AM PDT Thu Jun 2 2022 .SYNOPSIS...Warm temperatures are expected today before a slight cool down commences Friday through the weekend. Afternoon breezes will be on the increase with especially gusty winds near the Western Mojave Desert. Winds will ease next week as temperatures climb several degrees above normal. && .SHORT TERM...through Saturday. Warm temperatures are expected today as southwesterly flow aloft on the periphery of a low amplitude ridge builds across the Southwestern US. This will allow temperatures to climb to near 100 degrees or better along the lower elevations of the Mojave Desert. Heights will begin to decrease Friday into Saturday, resulting in a modest cooling trend with temperatures returning to near seasonal normal by Saturday afternoon. With the cooler temperatures will come an increase in afternoon wind gusts, with especially strong winds focused across the Western Mojave Desert near Barstow, where wind headlines are possible by Saturday. .LONG TERM...Sunday through Wednesday. The northern jet stream remains active with at least three separate shortwaves forecast to move out of the eastern Pacific into the Pacific Northwest. For our area, the flow is westerly through the period with minor embedded waves bringing periodic high clouds and breezy winds. No significant weather impacts are expected. Seasonal temperatures are forecast for Sunday then warming to around 5-7 degrees above normal by Tuesday and Wednesday. && .AVIATION...For Harry Reid...Light and diurnal winds expected through early-afternoon before breezy southwest winds pick up around 22Z with gusts to 20 kts possible. After sunset, moderate confidence in downslope winds reaching the terminal, with due west winds gusting between 20 and 25 kts, subsiding around 12Z. Gusty southwest winds will return Friday afternoon. BKN high clouds will move into the region this afternoon, lasting through the remainder of the TAF period. For the rest of southern Nevada, southeastern California, and northwestern Arizona...Breezy southerly winds expected this afternoon along the Colorado River Valley and Owens Valley, with gusts to 20 kts at KEED, KIFP, and KBIH. KDAG will gust to 30 kts from the west. Winds will become light and variable after sunset before returning across the Mojave Desert Friday afternoon.
