Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Elko NV 427 AM PDT Fri Jun 17 2022 .SYNOPSIS...Humboldt County will be significantly cooler today with lighter winds. Most of the rest of northern and central Nevada however will be warm and windy with blowing dust. There is a slight chance of thunderstorms over portions of northern NV this afternoon and evening too. && .SHORT TERM...Today through Saturday. Trough energy settles in along the west coast today, with a southerly jet spreading over NV. Breezy westerly winds of 10 to 20 mph will be common today over the NW portion of the CWA, including Humboldt County and portions of Western Elko and Northern Lander Counties. Southerly winds over the remainder of the CWA, including most of central and NE NV will be breezy to windy. Blowing dust is likely over much of the CWA again today which may reduce visibilities at times and make travel more challenging. Hazy conditions will likely linger into the late evening and overnight hours after winds subside. The main change to the forecast for today was to introduce a slight chance of thunderstorms in the area between the westerly winds and the southerly winds. Any thunderstorm activity that may develop today is expected to be very isolated. Best chances for a few strikes will be along the line from Gabbs in NW Nye County, north and east up through Lander County, northern Eureka County and up through the western and central portions of Elko County, and into Humboldt County. The cooling trend continues on Saturday as the trough energy along the west coast drifts onshore into Oregon and California. By Saturday afternoon the base of the trough begins to nose into western NV. Southerly winds will be gusty across much of central and eastern NV Saturday afternoon. Strongest winds and gusts on Saturday are expected over and near White Pine County. As the trough begins to move into western NV on Saturday there will be a slight chance for showers and thunderstorms over portions of northern NV, mainly north of I80. .LONG TERM...Saturday night through next Thursday. Model simulations continue to show an upper trough axis passing through the area Saturday night into Sunday. Associated with this system is cold air aloft, which will aid in the development of isolated thunderstorms. Have expanded coverage southward to central Nevada as well. Winds will be breezy but gusts should remain less than 30 mph. Highs will be much cooler with readings in the 60s to around 70. The system will take its time lifting northward Sunday night with showers expected to slowly diminish in aerial coverage. Overnight lows have trended slightly downward a degree or two and will be in the 30s to near 40. A frost advisory may be needed for portions of northern and central Nevada for Monday morning. Monday through Wednesday, quiet weather is expected with afternoon highs warming into the 70s on Monday, climbing into the 80s and 90s on Tuesday through Thursday. Overnight lows will be in the 40s and 50s. Afternoon breezes are possible but gusts should be less than 25 mph. && .AVIATION...Strong gusty winds at all sites (except KWMC) with peak gusts reaching 40-50 KTS Friday afternoon. Visibilities may fall below 3SM from elevated dust, particularly at KBAM and KEKO. && .FIRE WEATHER...Cooler air spreads into Humboldt County today, however most of the rest of the region will be warm to hot again, with strong and gusty southerly winds this afternoon and evening. A mix of isolated wet and dry thunderstorms are possible over portions of northern and central NV this afternoon and early evening. On Saturday temperatures continue to trend cooler across the region. While winds will be lighter on Saturday, the Fire Weather Watch remains in effect for portions of central and NE NV where dry and gusty conditions look favorable once again.
