Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Elko NV 117 PM PDT Thu Jul 14 2022 .SYNOPSIS...Monsoonal moisture continues to impact the silver state for the next several days. Progressively wetter thunderstorms will occur in central and eastern NV. Friday will see enough moisture with slow thunderstorms that flash flooding may occur. Abnormally hot conditions will also persist for the next several days as well. && .SHORT TERM...Today through Saturday. Monsoonal moisture continues to stream across the silver state for the next several days. Northwestern NV including Humboldt County will likely be outside the monsoonal moisture area remaining dry with fair weather. As for central and eastern NV the moisture is causing thunderstorms today and then again for Friday and Saturday. The amount of moisture will be increasing over this time so the thunderstorms will become progressively wetter today into Friday. Flash flooding will be a threat from the thunderstorms Friday, check out the hydrology section for further details. Saturday will see further thunderstorms in the same area with the same slow motion, however total moisture amounts look to be less so the amount of thunderstorms will be lower. This doesn't completely eliminate the chance of flash flooding but does make it less likely. Strong downburst winds will be possible from any convection today through Saturday. Ambient winds will be gusty during the daytime and light at night with NW NV seeing slightly stronger gusts compared to the rest of NV. Temperatures will remain hot with highs in the 90s to low 100s across the silver state. .LONG TERM...Saturday evening through Thursday The high pressure system over the Southwest U.S. is expected to persist through much, if not all, of the long term. Southwesterly flow aloft pulls monsoonal moisture in to the region, continuing the potential for afternoon showers and thunderstorms during the afternoon. It still is a little too early to quantify the probability for wet versus dry thunderstorms, but the overall picture supports a mainly dry thunderstorm situation. Temperatures continue to remain hot and above average in the 90s and low 100s initially, but guidance suggests a very weak downward trend in temps over the week. Regardless, weather conditions for the long term look to remain hot with afternoon breezy winds and the possibility wet and dry thunderstorms depending on the placement of the high pressure system. && .AVIATION...VFR conditions are expected at KWMC and KTPH through the next 24 hours. KELY, KBAM, and KEKO could see periods of MVFR conditions as showers and thunderstorms move through eastern Nevada. Southwesterly winds continue this evening with gusts between 15 and 25 kts before weakening overnight. && .FIRE WEATHER...Monsoonal moisture and thunderstorms will continue to impact the silver state for the foreseeable future. Dry thunderstorms will continue in central and eastern NV for the rest of today with a few lasting into the overnight hours. A Red Flag Warning remains in effect to 11 pm for zones 425, 469, and 470 for the dry thunder. Increased moisture push into NV on Friday will cause more extensive coverage of wet thunderstorms with very slow storm motions. This opens up the threat of flash flooding both on and off burn scars for zones 425, 426, 427, and 470. Flooding can propagate down dry washes and creeks which in turn may hamper travel to and from fires. Saturday will continue to see dry and wet thunderstorm activity in eastern and central NV. For all these days strong erratic downburst winds will be possible from any convection. && .HYDROLOGY...Friday will see slow moving wet thunderstorms primarily in northern Nye, White Pine, southern Lander and Eureka, and southeastern Elko Counties. These thunderstorms can produce heavy rainfall over a long duration which can lead to flash flooding. The odds will increase in stepper terrain of the mountains and in areas with high runoff such as rocky areas. Additionally fire burn scars can lead to higher than normal runoff increasing the chances for flash flooding in these areas. The risk for flash flooding can extend far away from the thunderstorms as water flows in dry washes and dry creek beds. If flooding is encountered turn around and don't drown as roads can easily wash out. Flood water can contain contain dangerous debris and sweep away vehicles and people. && .LKN WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES...
