Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Las Vegas NV 838 AM PST Tue Feb 15 2022 .SYNOPSIS...Unsettled conditions return today as a weather system moves through the region. Gusty winds and shower chances are expected areawide, with light snow accumulations possible above 4500 feet. Lingering north winds are expected Wednesday and Thursday with a gradual moderation in temperatures expected over the weekend. && .UPDATE...This mornings water vapor imagery depicts a compact closed low dropping southward through central California with a swift southwesterly flow extending out ahead of it. Winds have been picking up through the night but will continue to increase through the remainder of the morning hours aided by a strengthening pressure gradient and daytime mixing. Sporadic bursts of downslope winds have also been noted in the Sierra this morning, with Oak Creek near Independence gusting to 55 mph in the last hour. Meanwhile, incoming cold front is currently draped roughly from Bishop to Tonopah and will drag southward through the day. Expecting Scattered showers to increase along and behind the front through this afternoon before spreading across the Mojave Desert region late in the day and overnight. Very light precipitation amounts are expected, though the airmass will be unstable enough for a few of the stronger showers to produce a lightning strike or two, and much of our forecast area is delineated in the general thunder risk by the SPC. Overall, the forecast is in good shape. -Outler- && .SHORT TERM...through Tuesday night. Deep upper low currently diving through northern California will continue to push south today. Prefrontal winds have been increasing over most areas during the evening hours with most locations seeing wind gusts between 20-30 mph. These winds will continue to increase today with the highest winds expected across the western Mojave Desert through southern Nevada and into Mohave County. Wind gusts between 35-45 mph are likely by late morning and afternoon ahead of the cold front that will push through late afternoon and overnight. Current wind advisories look good and no changed are planned. Areas of most concern, at least through the early morning, will be the eastern slopes of the Sierra where downslope winds have been increasing. So far, the highest gusts have been recorded around the Mammoth region and areas north of Bishop which has caused the shut down of Highway 395 from Bishop to the Nevada state line for high profile vehicles. Winds over the eastern Sierra have also been increasing from Bishop to Independence with gusts between 55-60 mph recorded at Big Pine and the Oak Creek RAWS at 2 AM. We can expected to see these stronger downslope winds continue through sunrise before diminishing as a cold front passes through the area and brings gusty postfrontal north winds. Although the winds behind the front will be gusty and shift to the north, it looks like the strongest winds will arrive later in the day across Inyo, Esmeralda, and Nye Counties with potential wind gusts approaching 50 mph. As the front tracks south and east through the region, look for northwest winds across the remainder of the area with some local gusts to around 40 mph, but at this time it does not look like the eastern and southern portions of the area will see strong postfrontal winds. In addition to the winds, the more westerly track will prove more favorable to shower activity thanks to a slight entrainment of Pacific moisture and very cold temperatures aloft resulting in steep lapse rates. This will promote shower activity with forecast soundings even supporting the potential for a couple lightning strikes across the deserts in the late afternoon and evening. Best chances will be tied to the higher terrain, but fairly widespread 20-40 percent chances exist across most of the region north of I-40. Shower chances will linger into early Wednesday morning across southern Nevada and northwest Arizona. The colder airmass thats accompanying this system will also result in some light snow accumulations above 4500 feet, with the Spring Mountains possibly picking up 2-4 inches during the evening and overnight hours. 1-3 inches of snow may also dust the high deserts of Esmeralda and Nye county with some sporadic snow showers expected through the day. Motorists traveling between Las Vegas and Tonopah on the US-95 should expect strong wind gusts and scattered snow showers on their travels. .LONG TERM...Thursday through the weekend. A weak shortwave forecast to skim the eastern CWA Wednesday night will move east of the area on Thursday. Tightened gradients behind this system will keep gusty north winds in the Colorado River Valley through much of the day on Thursday. The gradient relaxes on Friday for a day of lighter winds. Expect temperatures to be seasonal again on Thursday before warming a few degrees above normal on Friday. Another weak upper disturbance is forecast to move across the area on Saturday before a more substantial trough moves into California on Sunday and over our area on Monday. Temperatures are forecast to be around 5 degrees above normal over the weekend before cooling back to normal on Monday. && .AVIATION...For Harry Reid...Gusty winds will impact the terminals through the day. South to southwest winds this morning have already been gusting 25 to 30KT with patchy blowing dust at times- expecting this trend to continue through the early morning before winds increase out of the southwest after 16Z. Moderate low level wind shear and turbulence can be expected as well until about 16Z. Gusts 30 to 40KT are likely through the afternoon and early evening, with continued patchy blowing dust reducing visibility at times. After 00Z, moderate confidence that winds will turn west and drop back in speeds compared to the afternoon. Gusts to around 25KT may continue through the first part of the night, low confidence that gusts will end around 03Z. Either way, elevated wind speeds around 10KT will continue through at least midnight. Overnight into Wednesday morning, a cold front will eventually pass through the valley, likely between 06Z-12Z, with winds becoming northwest when the front moves through. NOrthwest winds will increase and start gusting by 17Z, with gusts 20 to 25KT possible through Wednesday afternoon. Scattered light precipitation is possible overnight in and around the valley. Showers may impact the terminals at times 00Z through 12Z, with CIGs down to 6000-8000ft with any showers that pass over the airport. Clouds will lift and scatter out Wednesday late morning and afternoon. For the rest of southern Nevada, northwest Arizona and southeast California... Gusty winds are expected across the region today. At BIH, winds may jump back and forth from north winds around 10KT to west winds gusting 25 to 35KT through the morning before becoming consistently northwest later this morning. Elsewhere, winds should favor a west or southwest direction much of today. Widespread gusts of 30 to 40KT are likely this afternoon and early evening. Higher gusts in the higher terrain at 50KT or more are possible. Winds will remain elevated through the Inyo County into western Nevada as a cold front pushes through this region tonight. North winds with gusts 20 to 30KT at times are expected through that area. Elsewhere, winds will slowly diminish through the night and Wednesday morning. Scattered precipitation is expected as the system that is bringing the gusty winds to the region moves southeast this afternoon and tonight. CIGs 5000-8000ft and mountain obscuration will be possible with any shower activity. The most widespread showers and potential precipitation/CIG impacts should be this afternoon and early evening.
