.SYNOPSIS...Look for snow showers tonight, then gradually warming
temperatures tomorrow with any valley snow showers changing over
to rain. The combined rain with snow melt could bring hydrologic
concerns to some areas across northern and central Nevada. Some
higher elevation locations will also see significant snowfall. A
brief break in the weather is expected on Monday.

.SHORT TERM...Tonight through Sunday night. The next batch of
precipitation is currently working its way across northern and
central Nevada this afternoon. Radar is showing some light snow
showers across I-80 and south, including US Highway 50. Additional
wet weather will continue into the evening and overnight hours
tonight. Area accumulations are expected to be in the one to three
inch range for the valleys with about three to six inches for the
mountain passes and summits. Overnight lows are forecast to be in
the 20s to near 30 degrees.

The weather will continue to be wet for Friday. Snow levels will
rise during the day with any snow changing over to rain in many of the
valley locations, though some of the higher passes and summits
could see a heavy rain/snow mix. Snow levels will range from about
6000 feet along the border with Idaho to over 7000 feet along US
Highway 50. There was enough concern regarding the amount of
rainfall possible and so issued a flash flood watch for Humboldt
county. Will continue the hydrologic outlook for all other
locations. Please see the hydrology section below. Due to the
proximity of the colder air along the Idaho border, and also the
higher elevation, have issued a winter storm warning for northern
Elko county and the Ruby Mountains. Highs will be in the upper 30s
to mid 40s, though it will be cooler in northern Elko county with
highs in the low to mid 30s. The light to moderate rain and the
high snow levels are expected to continue through the Friday
overnight period. Lows are expected to be warmest between I-80 and
US Highway 50 with readings in the mid to upper 30s. Other
locations will see the upper 20s to low 30s.

Look for the copious moisture to stream into the area through
Saturday. An upper level low pressure system will begin diving
south and east and will position itself just off the coast of
California. South to southwest flow will keep the air mass warm
with highs in the low to mid 40s. Winds will be breezy with some
gusts of 25 to 35 mph as wind speeds remain below advisory
criteria. The upper low and attendant cold front will push through
the area Saturday night into Sunday. Winds will shift to the
northwest through the night and bring in some colder air to the
region. This will allow any residual rain showers to change over
to snow at frontal passage. Overnight lows will be in the 20s.

Sunday and Sunday night. The weather system is expected to exit
though residual snow showers are possible under the northwest
flow. Some downslope winds are possible and will need to look at
this for possible wind advisory products. Highs will be in the
30s. There could be some patchy freezing fog during the overnight
with clearing. Overnight lows will be in the single digits and
teens.

.LONG TERM...Monday through Thursday. A brief break in the weather
is anticipated for Monday as a weak ridge translates over the
forecast area. Highs will remain on the chilly side with readings
in the 20s and 30s. Winds will remain light. Another system,
though weaker with less moisture, will move across northern and
central Nevada Monday night and Tuesday. Accumulations are
expected to be in the one to two inch range in the valleys.
Overnight lows will be in the teens. Highs on Tuesday will be in
the 20s and 30s. Another system is possible for Wednesday and
Thursday. This one does look a bit wetter and will need to keep an
eye on it. Highs will be in the 30s with lows in the teens and
20s.

.AVIATION...Isolated -SHSN possible this afternoon with more -SHSN
expected later this evening as a wetter system begins to take
shape out west. Some of the heavier showers could produce LIFR
CIGS/VSBY at all TAF sites except KTPH. Expect warming tomorrow,
changing any SHSN to SHRA with flying conditions remaining poor.

.HYDROLOGY...All computer simulations have been consistent in
showing an atmospheric river event with copious amounts of
moisture streaming into northern and central Nevada from Friday
through the weekend. As the moisture moves into the area, snow
levels will rise to between 6000 to 7000 plus feet, depending on
location. There is a concern for snow melt and runoff from the
rain through this event. Some of the smaller basins that are prone
to react quickly due to runoff are susceptible to much stronger
flows. One area of heightened concern is Humboldt county and have
issued a flash flood watch as a result. Some of the smaller creeks
that may see minor flooding include Martin Creek, Quinn River,
McDermitt Creek, as well as those areas with poor drainage. These
will need to be watched over the weekend. Other creeks and
streams in other locations across the forecast area that could
also see higher than normal flows include Lamoille Creek, Maggie
Creek, Rock Creek, Owyhee River near Gold Creek, and South Twin
River near Round Mountain. Will also reissue the hydrologic
outlook as well for all other locations.

Nine inches fell at site (WHPN2) Wheeler Peak Snotel, Elevation 10067 feet. Of Note: Fourteen inches fell for the duration of the event (12/30/22 12AM - 01/01/23 9AM). NOTE: this event started on 12/31/2022 at 20:00 and ended 01/01/2023 at 08:00. Since Storm Data will not allow dates to begin or end outside of 12/01/22 & 12-31/22 or 01/01/23 & 01/31/23 this was the solution.
