Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Glasgow MT 240 PM MDT Thu Aug 4 2022 .DISCUSSION... With a low pressure trough descending on the region from southern Alberta, very hot temperatures and just enough instability are present to allow some scattered high-based thunderstorms to develop off the higher terrain for central Montana. Wind gusts of 35 to 55 mph have already been recorded between Boulder and White Sulphur Springs. That general threat will spread northeastward this afternoon and evening. Downburst/outflow winds will be possible with any passing thunderstorm. Post-frontal air mass from the Canadian Rockies will spread much cooler air over our region over the next two days. High temperatures on Saturday will only climb up near 70 degrees. A much needed relief. Thunderstorms on Friday will be confined to near or south of I-90, while thunderstorms on Saturday afternoon through Saturday night will spread further north toward US-Highway 2. Sunday night and beyond, another strong ridge of high pressure will keep any precipitation away and will allow high temperatures to climb back up into the mid to upper 90s. && .AVIATION... FLIGHT CONDITIONS: Mainly VFR. An approaching cold front will bring mid level clouds and the potential for isolated thunderstorms through the evening. Isolated IFR may be possible after 23Z for KGGW and KOLF. Hot temperatures today will lead to high density altitude concerns. WINDS: Southwest winds of 10 to 20 kts with gusts to 30 kts are expected this afternoon and evening, before shifting northwest overnight. Gusty and erratic winds are possible near any thunderstorms. At 345 PM MDT, Doppler radar was tracking strong thunderstorms along
a line extending from 20 miles southwest of Hays to 9 miles southwest
of Grass Range. Movement was northeast at 55 mph.
HAZARD...Wind gusts of 50 to 55 mph and pea size hail.
SOURCE...Radar indicated.
IMPACT...Gusty winds could knock down tree limbs and blow around
unsecured objects. Minor damage to outdoor objects is
possible.

water and move indoors or inside a vehicle. Remember, lightning can
strike out to 10 miles from the parent thunderstorm. If you can hear
thunder, you are close enough to be struck by lightning. Move to
safe shelter now! Do not be caught on the water in a thunderstorm.
