Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Mount Holly NJ
937 PM EDT Thu Nov 3 2022

.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure remains in control through the first half of the
weekend with above average temperatures. A cold front is expected to
pass through the region on Monday. High pressure should again
begin to build back by the middle part of next week.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH FRIDAY/...
As of 930 PM, a clear sky continues across the region. This
combined with a dry air mass and little to no wind has resulted
in very good radiational cooling conditions. Therefore the
temperatures have dropped quite a bit early this evening for
much of the area. With this latest update, continued to tweak
the hourly temperature grids this evening to keep up with the
quicker lowering. The 00z Sterling/Dulles RAOB shows the dryness
of the air mass, although some moistening has occurred in the
lowest levels due to cooling. The 00z Wallops Island RAOB is
similar and both show a shallow inversion in place as the near
surface air has cooled much faster than just above it.

The very good radiational cooling conditions along with some
increase in the low-level moisture tends to set the stage for
decent fog development, however we continue to have a lingering
drier air mass in place overall. The main moistening is near the
surface, therefore fog development could end up being shallow.
While some low clouds could develop in conjuction with the fog
as the low-level inversion strengthens overnight, the extent of
this remains as low confidence. Satellite imagery shows some
patches of lower clouds shifting westward off the coast of
Delmarva, and this could be a sign of some deeper moisture
moving westward. For now, maintained patchy fog in the forecast
along with some increase in clouds later tonight. Fog and/or
some low cloud development will tend to halt the temperature
drop overnight. Much of New Jersey to parts of Delaware to even
far southeastern Pennsylvania may have a better shot of some
fog late given higher dew points compared to areas farther north
and west.

Otherwise, high pressure extending across our area will move
offshore later tonight and Friday and this will keep a continuation
of fair weather in place through Friday. Low temperatures
tonight will be in the 40s to some low 50s. High temperatures on
Friday will be mostly in the upper 60s to low 70s.

&&

.SHORT TERM /FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY NIGHT/...
The upper ridge axis will progressively shunt east through the
weekend as the trough and mid-level low ride through the Great
Lakes region. The occluded surface low will follow a similar
track and slowly pull a cold front toward our region. Overall,
not many changes were warranted from the previous forecast. We
will remain in unseasonably warm, moist southerly flow ahead of
the front from Friday night through Sunday. The result will be
two fold: near record highs both Saturday and Sunday (see
climate section) and potential for overnight/early morning fog
development. With regard to fog, not exceptionally confident at
this time on development or extent for either night, though
Friday night looks more favorable as crossover temperatures may
be reached and an increase in clouds Saturday night may preclude
development. Included mention of patchy fog in the forecast for
Friday night. Highs are likely to reach the mid-upper 70s both
days. Saturday night lows will be a few degrees warmer (low 60s)
than Friday night (mid-upper 50s) as well owing to the
increasing clouds.

In terms of precipitation for the period, akin to previous
forecasts, the best synoptic scale support looks to remain off
to our northwest and the front likely won't reach our area
until sometime Monday. We could be in close proximity to the
entrance region of an upper jet which could promote enough lift
for a few scattered showers on Sunday. QPF amounts continue to
trend downward and a look at both deterministic output plus SREF
plumes indicates minimal amounts areawide, thus have pulled
back some on PoPs to just low-end chance for Sunday. Winds may
become a bit gusty on Saturday as well with a tightening
pressure gradient and boundary layer mixing.

&&

.LONG TERM /MONDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
The aforementioned front will pass through the region sometime
on Monday. There is still a bit of uncertainty on when exactly
that happens, and this will ultimately have an impact on how
high temperatures can get on Monday. Near record highs could
again be challenged provided the front arrives in the latter
portion of the day, while an earlier passage would preclude
highs from reaching into the mid-upper 70s as currently
forecast. Consensus among guidance is still a second half of
the day passage, so kept pretty close to the previous forecast
with both precipitation and temperatures. Deterministic and
ensemble guidance indicates very little precipitation associated
with the front with the absence of upper support, but a few
spotty showers could still be possible with weak mesoscale
forcing and PWATs remaining near the 1.5 inch mark.

A return to a quieter and dry pattern is expected beginning on
Tuesday as a surface high develops across the Great Lakes and a
strong upper ridge builds across the southeast. Resultant northerly
flow on the east side of the surface high will reduce high
temperatures significantly from the weekend, though still close to
climatological normals for early November. More uncertainty arises
towards the middle half of the week with models developing a coastal
low across the southeast. Recent ensemble runs hold the upper ridge
strong and either keep precipitation well to our south or try to
pull the low around the ridge. Neither of these solutions appear
more likely at this point, so held with NBM guidance to close out
the period.

.AVIATION /02Z FRIDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG, KILG,
KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas.

Tonight...VFR overall, however some fog and/or low clouds should
develop at several terminals mainly toward daybreak with some
local restrictions. The extent of the fog/low cloud development
continues to be low confidence, and therefore utilized a TEMPO
group. Light and variable to calm winds.

Friday...Any fog/low clouds dissipate during the morning, otherwise
VFR. Light and variable winds, becoming southeast to south 4-8 knots.
Moderate confidence.

Outlook...

Friday Night...VFR to start, with possible restrictions due to low
clouds/patchy fog overnight. Southerly winds 5 knots or less.
Confidence in fog development is low, with moderate confidence in
overall pattern.

Saturday...Sub-VFR restrictions possible early morning due to
lingering low clouds/patchy fog improving to VFR for the remainder
of the day. Southerly winds around 10 knots with gusts to 15-20
knots. Moderate confidence.

Sunday....Predominantly VFR. Some morning low clouds may temporarily
reduce to sub-VFR. Southerly winds 5-10 knots. Low confidence.

Monday - Tuesday...VFR. Northerly winds 5-10 knots. Moderate
confidence.

&&

.MARINE...
Fair weather will continue through Friday. High pressure will
gradually move offshore during that time and winds behind the
departing high will favor E/SE directions thru the period.
Patchy fog possible close to the shore areas late tonight/early
Friday.

Outlook...

Saturday - Sunday...No marine headlines expected. Southerly
winds 10-15 knots with gusts to 20 knots. Seas 3-4 feet.

Monday...SCA conditions possible. Westerly winds 5-10 knots. Seas 4-
5 feet.

Tuesday...SCA conditions possible. Northerly winds 15-20 knots with
gusts to 25 knots. Seas 5-7 feet.
