.SYNOPSIS...
Intense low pressure moves north across Pennsylvania this morning
and into upstate New York this afternoon and into Quebec tonight.
High pressure builds in on Tuesday, a warm front will arrive on
Wednesday, followed by a cold front Wednesday night. A large dome of
high pressure will build from the west Thursday into Friday.
Developing offshore low pressure may come close to the area next
weekend.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...
Strong low pressure over Central PA will continue to slowly
intensify as it lifts up through NYS today.
Back edge of heavy rain and strong wind axis moving NE through
NYC/NJ metro as of 4 am and will continue to slide ne through
the region this morning. A rumble of thunder not out of the
question for twin forks early this morning. Wintry mix/freezing
rain continues across interior portions of the Lower Hud, S CT
and W Passaic early this morning, but will continue to be
eroded through daybreak with mild easterly flow. Little
additional snow/sleet accumulations at this point, but an
additional 1/10 inch of ice possible across the far interior
locations. Areas that have risen into the mid 30s may still have
residual road icing due to still cold ground temps. Expect
those road temps to warm sufficiently for just wet roadways once
temps approach and exceed 40 degrees, which should occur more
quick after daybreak.
Precip tapers to iso to scattered showers (snow shower NW
interior) this morning, and continues through the afternoon,
before ending from w to e in wake of trough axis passage.
Perhaps an additional dusting of snow across NW hills today
from this activity, with just a few hundredths of rain (melted
wet snowflakes) elsewhere.
In terms of winds, intense E/SE llj will slide ne across LI and
coastal/SE CT through around 7am with sustained winds 35-45 mph
with gusts 55-65 mph. Highest winds across E LI and extreme SE
CT. Once llj/occluded front passes, winds shift to the SE/S and
diminish for a few hours before picking up for the S/SW 15 to 25
mph with gusts 30 to 40 mph mid morning through the afternoon.
Highs likely reached for much of the region this morning,
gradually dropping through the afternoon with cold advecetion.

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH 6 PM TUESDAY/...
Deep polar upper troughing continues across the NE US tonight
into Tuesday, with intense low pressure tracking up through
northern New England tonight and into SE Canada on Tuesday,
while polar high pressure gradually builds towards the region.
Drying conds tonight in wake of polar trough axis with breezy
NW winds (gusts 30-40 mph) ushering in another unseasonably
cold, but not frigid, airmass once again for tonight into
Tuesday. Lows in the 20s tonight and highs in the upper 20s to
lower 30s on Tuesday.

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY NIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY/...
The pressure gradient in the wake of the departing storm system
relaxes Tuesday as high pressure settles nearby. This will
result in a good amount of sunshine and slightly below normal
temperatures Tuesday and Tuesday night.
As high pressure slips offshore a return flow gets established on
Wednesday. A warm front extending down into the region from a
clipper low moving through the Great Lakes will bring more in the
way of clouds. Temperatures will turn a bit milder and should be a
few degrees above normal. The clipper low then moves to the north
Wednesday night, dragging its cold front across the region. There
won't be a lot of moisture and lift with this system with only
perhaps a few rain and snow showers Wednesday night into Thursday
morning. Therefore the frontal system should come through without
any meaningful precipitation. Into Thursday a large 1040 mb high
will move into the the nation's mid section and will build east
through Friday. This will provide a return to much colder
conditions, with noticeably colder air moving in for Thursday night
into Friday. At the present time, it does not appear to be quite as
cold as recent cold waves. Wind chills however could get down into
the single digits in most places Friday morning. It appears
temperatures will run about 10 degrees or so below normal by
Thursday night and Friday. Current guidance consensus has
temperatures not getting out of the 20s region wide on Friday.
There is a lot of uncertainty with the upcoming weekend
forecast and whether a storm will develop along the coast and
how close it may get into next weekend. Model spread and
uncertainty is high to start next weekend. There are many
ensemble members that show offshore and closer to the coast
solutions. The time frame will need to be monitored in the
coming days.

.AVIATION /10Z MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
***HIGH IMPACT STORM THIS MORNING***
Low pressure over central Pennsylvania at 08Z will track north of
the terminals today and into eastern Canada tonight.
Conditions were generally MVFR with areas of IFR. Light to moderate
rain, with locally heavy rain, will be coming to an end from south
to north from 10Z to 13Z. Snow was occurring at KSWF, and will be
changing to rain, with a brief period of freezing rain possible,
early this morning.
Once the rain ends MVFR conditions are expected through the day with
a chance of rain and/or snow showers. Conditions improve to VFR this
evening.
E winds 15-25 kt with gusts 40-45 kt, except up to 50 kt for KGON
through 12Z. Winds then shift rapidly to the S towards 12Z, and then
SW this afternoon, remaining gusty. By Monday evening, winds will
become more westerly. LLWS is possible until 11Z to 12Z with 60 to
70 kts at 2000 feet.

Amendments for changing flight categories, mainly early this
morning, with amendments possible through the day with improving
conditions.

.MARINE...
Gale and Storm conditions on the waters this morning will
briefly subside as a frontal boundary moves through the waters,
but then gives way to southwest gales on the ocean, LI sound
and bays later this morning into tonight. NW gales will
gradually subside to SCA from west to east late tonight into
Tuesday morning. SCA conditions likely continue all waters on
Tuesday, subsiding from w to e Tuesday night.
High seas on the ocean today will be slow to subside through
Tuesday, with sub SCA conds not returning till Tuesday night.
However, a return flow gets established quickly on Wednesday
with any brief sub SCA conditions being short lived. Winds and
seas will climb during the day on Wednesday resulting in a
return to SCA conditions. Sub SCA conditions are then expected
to return to the non-ocean waters at some point Wednesday night.
A N-NW flow arrives for Thursday which should result in
marginal SCA conditions for the eastern shoreline waters, along
with the ocean waters.

.HYDROLOGY...
An additional 1/4 to 3/4" of rain expected for E LI, Lower Hud
and SW CT this morning before tapering off. Minor urban and poor
drainage flooding likely due to frozen ground and runoff.
The river gauge at the Wallkill River at Gardiner may be
impacted by ice.
No Hydrologic impacts are expected Tuesday through the end of
the week.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
WIDESPREAD MODERATE COASTAL FLOODING THIS MORNING FOR MUCH OF
THE COAST.
LOCALIZED MAJOR COASTAL FLOODING POSSIBLE FOR PARTS OF LONG
ISLAND AND CONNECTICUT SHORELINE THIS MORNING.
Forecast on track for a widespread moderate to locally major
coastal flooding event with this morning tide in response to the
gale to storm force onshore flow affecting the region.
Forecast continues to lean towards higher guidance, and taking
peak surge in a hour or so window before/after time of high
tide, to account for the intense wind and wave forcing, and erratic
behavior of surge in these intensely forced systems. Likelihood
for 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 ft surge during the times of high tide for
the southern bays of LI and NY/NJ harbor, with 3 1/2 to 4 1/2
surge potential along LI Sound and Peconic/gardiners Bay.
Winds will shift from E/SE storm force winds to S/SSW Gales
just before the time of high tide this morning. This maintain
potential for localized major coastal flooding (3 ft above
ground) along southern Nassau County, Peconic/Gardiners Bay and
S CT and Westchester coast. Widespread moderate flooding is
expected across these areas and Jamaica Bay, with widespread
minor to localized moderate for the rest of LI shoreline and
NY/NJ harbor. This forecast is a few tenths below the October 27
2018 Nor'easter for many warning areas. Impacts from this event
can be seen in NWS NY coastal flood impact catalogs. A Coastal
flood warning continues for much of the coastline, except
advisory for upper NY/NJ harbor to address threat.
In addition to the stillwater level, battering surf of 9 to 13
ft is likely along the oceanfront tonight into Monday morning,
with areas of dune erosion and scattered overwashes likely
during the Monday morning high tide. Breaking surf of 4 to 7 ft
is quite possible on western LI Sound Tonight before high tide,
which may result in some minor shoreline impacts. This wave
action likely begins to subside before the time of high tide as
E/ESE winds subside and shift SSW, preventing widespread major
shoreline flood impacts, but 3 to 4 ft surf may still be ongoing
and directed towards the the CT shoreline during the time of
high tide as SSW gales begin to develop. This could result in
locally major flood impacts along the CT shoreline during the
time of high tide. In addition, the windshift may force residual
surge to south facing shorelines of the southern and eastern
bays of LI. Also it may allow for surge to slosh towards eastern
Great South Bay. Low predictability on this, but potential
scenarios that are covered under the warning.
