Deaths and injuries are direct and indirect together, as the offices filed them. Damage is property and crops in the dollars of the year, not adjusted for inflation, and only where an office estimated it.
Although a significant winter storm impacted central California between November 7 and November 9, the interior remained abnormally dry in November 2022 as most of the area had slightly below normal precipitation totals for the month. Area Forecast Discussion...UPDATED
National Weather Service Hanford CA
325 PM PDT Mon Oct 31 2022
.UPDATE...Updated Air Quality Issues Section...
&&
.SYNOPSIS...A storm will bring a significant cooling trend,
breezy winds, and widespread rain and mountain snow late Tuesday
and Wednesday. High temperatures in the San Joaquin Valley are
expected in high 50s to low 60s on Wednesday and Thursday. Cold
morning lows expected Friday morning with patchy morning frost
possible.
&&
.DISCUSSION...The first significant storm system will move into
the region Tuesday. A Winter Storm Warning has been posted for the
higher elevations of the central sierra starting Tuesday
afternoon to Wednesday night. Lots of high cloud cover moving
through central CA this afternoon due to a leading weak trough off
the central coast.
A trough approaches the Pacific NW tonight and into California
Tuesday. Strong dynamics with an initial wave will increase
gradients driving a cold front into central CA Tuesday afternoon.
Ensembles are in good agreement as to the strength and positioning
of the trough. Additional upper level energy will drive the low
through SCal and bring a cold northerly flow across the state. The
trough will be out of the CA Friday afternoon as a ridge briefly
builds in from the EPac.
The trough will bring snow and strong winds to the Sierra Nevada in
addition to rain in the San Joaquin Valley. Higher resolution
ensembles show gusty wind potential especially along the east side
of the San Joaquin Valley so concern gusty winds may result in
local blowing dust with decreasing air quality Tuesday afternoon.
As the trough progresses southeasterly along the Sierra Nevada,
Upslope NW flow and colder air it will bring a chance of a mix of
rain and snow in the Kern County mountains on Wednesday and
Thursday. Current ensembles have the rain starting for the North
Central Valley Tuesday afternoon with Kern County later in the
evening. The snow will start to come in early afternoon towards
the high country of Yosemite in the Central Sierra Nevada.
Snow levels will start 6-7kft and lower to 5kft Tuesday night.
Storm snow totals expected 4-8 inches locally up to 10 inches above
6000 through Tuesday night. Chance of showers will continue
Wednesday with a cold unstable airmass over the area. Snow level
lowers to near 4500 feet bring the potential for snow at pass level.
However precipitation amounts are expected to be mainly light.
The threat of cold unstable showers continues Thursday mainly over
the mountains. Frosty temperatures in the 30s will be possible in
the San Joaquin valley Friday morning as a ridge starts building
into California resulting in favorable radiational cooling
conditions.
&&
.AVIATION...
VFR conditions will prevail across Central California for at
least the next 24 hours.
