During the latter part of June, the Southwest was under the influence of a strong ridge of high pressure centered over the southern Plains. This allowed temperatures to climb slightly above seasonal normal values between the 21st through the 26th. At Phoenix Sky Harbor, afternoon high temperatures topped out at 108 degrees for several days during this time. According to the Maricopa County Department of Public Health, 13 heat-associated fatalities occurred due to this heat event.
