Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Birmingham AL 1105 PM CDT Thu Jun 16 2022 .UPDATE... Evening Update. && .SHORT TERM... /Updated at 1100 PM CDT Thu Jun 16 2022/ One large storm is still ongoing in GA, but sliding this way. In addition, several isolated pockets of showers are developing along boundaries in the east. Raised PoPs to high chance in the east as they will continue to develop over the next several hours and may wind up with fairly good scattered activity through 2 to 3 am. Meanwhile the activity in the south continues to slide east- northeast and may clip the south and southwest, so continued chance PoPs here as well. Temperatures are still on track to be yet another muggy night. 16 Previous short-term discussion: /Updated at 0731 PM CDT Thu Jun 16 2022/ The thermodynamic environment over Central Alabama still holds plenty of instability. SBCAPES are still around 5000 with DCAPE values around 1500. Low level lapse rates are still high due to the insolation, but should start to decrease as we lose sunshine. The big difference from yesterday is lower mean moisture content and no discernible upper feature. But, there are some smaller scale boundaries moving around out there. Lowered pops slightly but did hold onto some pops overnight. The microburst potential is still high to very high and there may be some boundary interactions. With the atmosphere in place, will keep mention of severe storms possible through 10 pm. 75 Previous short-term discussion: /Updated at 1035 AM CDT Thu Jun 16 2022/ Through Tonight. The ridge will slightly shift to the west today which will help to push drier mid-level air westward into Central AL. This will slightly decrease moisture availability and should limit the coverage of showers and storms. Regardless, there will still be enough support for isolated to scattered thunderstorms this afternoon, especially south where seabreeze activity may proliferate northward. The large surplus of instability and dry air aloft could result in severe damaging wind gusts up to 60 mph if thunderstorms are able to form, but heat will continue to be the primary concern. Highs will reach the mid to upper 90s area-wide and like yesterday, a few spots may even reach 100F with 1000-850mb thicknesses forecast to be a few meters higher. This could push heat indices near 110F in isolated spots, but dewpoints may mix enough such that they remain around 71-73F. Overnight lows in the mid 70s won't provide much relief from the compounding heat concerns. Friday. Northwest flow will begin to set up tomorrow as the ridge builds further west and becomes established over the Central Plains. A pathetic cold front will propagate southward into north AL during the afternoon. This could provide an additional means for convective initiation, but not before temperatures hit the mid to upper 90s area-wide once again. Therefore, the Heat Advisory will continue through tomorrow afternoon. Any storms that develop could produce strong winds, and another low-end conditional severe threat may be introduced in a following update. 86 .LONG TERM... /Updated at 400 PM CDT Thu Jun 16 2022/ Friday night through Wednesday. Except for Friday evening's lingering low pops associated with the surface front, ridging with rain free and very hot conditions will continue to generally be present. Heat indices will remain higher across the southern part of Central Alabama on Saturday before the lower dew points can move in from the NE later Saturday night. While cool conditions are not expected by any means for Sunday through Tuesday, dew points will be significantly lower on Sunday as opposed to Friday. Sunday looks to have dew points in the middle 50s to lower 60s during the day instead of lower to middle 70s on Friday. Dew points, although lower than we are currently, will slowly inch up Monday and Tuesday as the surface ridge breaks down. By Wednesday, both air temperatures and heat indices will be elevated enough for the risk/probability for heat advisories to return. 08 Previous long-term discussion: /Updated at 330 AM CDT Thu Jun 16 2022/ Saturday through Wednesday. There's not a lot of good news for the long-term forecast period. The prospect for meaningful rain through this period will diminish with the loss of the tropical airmass on Saturday. By then, deep- layer flow becomes more northerly in response to a broad trough impacting the Northeast which will coincide with the mid/upper-level ridge retrograding into the Central Plains. This will also amplify the upper pattern into an Omega Block as a trough is also positioned across the West. The continental airmass will stick around in the Southeast through the weekend with dewpoints making the biggest plunge by Sunday. Afternoon dewpoints should mix down into the 50s and 60s that day with RH values dropping well below 40%. The drier air will, at least, promote "cooler" overnight temperatures into Monday. By Tuesday, the Omega Block is progged to break down pushing the surface ridge toward the Mid-Atlantic and allowing for the mid/upper- level anticyclone to establish back over the lower Mississippi Valley. Influence of the ridge with residual continental air in Central Alabama will allow for a period of increasing diurnal heat. Temperatures could rise into the 100s in some spots on Tuesday, with widespread upper 90s to low 100s forecast by Wednesday with little airmass modification. RH values likely remain below 40% each day with continued loss of soil moisture. Global models/ensembles are in consistently good agreement that excessive heat conditions could continue into late next week with support for high temperatures in the mid 100s by Thursday. If things don't drastically change, we could end up with a significant region- wide heatwave. 40/Sizemore && .AVIATION... 00Z TAF Discussion. A typical summer weather pattern over Central Alabama will lead to VFR conditions a majority of the taf period. Isolated to scattered convection is expected mainly during the afternoon and evening hours through the period. These storms may produce brief wind gusts, some hail and heavy rainfall. Clouds will be limited with a few cumulus and some convective blowoff. Winds will generally be light and variable overnight and exhibit some west to northwest component on Friday. 75 && .FIRE WEATHER... Hot and humid conditions persist through Friday with light and variable 20 ft winds. A Heat Advisory remains in effect through then. Not much relief is expected with ongoing excessive heat conditions into Friday, with only isolated showers and thunderstorms each afternoon and evening. A period of dry weather is forecast this weekend as a continental airmass replaces the tropical airmass via northerly flow. Highway 9 and Highway 22, or near Alexander City, moving northwest at
15 mph.
HAZARD...Winds in excess of 40 mph and half inch hail.
SOURCE...Radar indicated.
IMPACT...Gusty winds could knock down tree limbs and blow around
unsecured objects. Minor damage to outdoor objects is
possible.
