.SYNOPSIS...
Unsettled conditions continue into early next week. Another low
pressure system tracks across the area on Saturday. This is
expected to bring significant icing to central and western
portions of the area. Additional storm systems will bring mainly
rain to the area on Sunday and Monday.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM SATURDAY MORNING/...
As of 1000 PM EST Friday...
Not many changes this evening. Surface temps across central VA
are colder (upper 20s to around 30) compared to nearly all
guidance so have trended temps downward a little and kept them
cooler overnight. This will support freezing drizzle and mist
all night tonight. Main concern this evening is a colder trend
in some of the 00z high res guidance which could pull the edge
of the higher ice total just a little farther east into James
City County and some areas on the Peninsulas. Especially
concerned about the potential northeast extent of significant
freezing rain into Dorchester MD. Will evaluate the potential
need to expand the Ice Storm Warning into Dorchester MD tonight
and already bumped up ice totals there just just under a quarter
of an inch.
Surface analysis shows a weak area of low pressure offshore of
the Carolina coast with Arctic high pressure still over the nrn
Plains/Upper Midwest. This high continues to ridge into the
Northeast and Mid-Atlantic. Aloft, the flow is generally WSW
from the wrn Gulf Coast to the Mid- Atlantic. Several upper
disturbances are embedded in the flow aloft, and a series of
these will be responsible (in part) for the ice storm late
tonight-tomorrow. Skies are OVC with low clouds with areas of
freezing drizzle continuing across the area (especially central,
south-central, and interior SE VA). We even have some minor
icing on trees here at the office in Wakefield this evening.
Expect pockets of FZDZ to persist through much of the the first
part of tonight (before more appreciable pcpn starts to move in
by Saturday morning...associated with our next system). Areas
across far SE VA/NE NC will see drizzle and light rain through
tonight. The going Winter Wx Advisory remains in effect until
05z/midnight, with additional advisories/Ice Storm Warnings for
the next system from 05z Sat- Sat night. Temperatures will only
fall a couple of degrees tonight as NNE flow/low clouds persist.
By 12z Saturday, pcpn is expected to overspread most of the
area (except for perhaps the far N/NW counties). This will
mainly be in the form of rain or freezing rain, with a few sleet
pellets possible from LKU-SBY within a few hours following the
onset of the pcpn. Temperatures may to drop enough for a brief
period of freezing rain to occur as far SE as Newport News-
Suffolk- Ahoskie before temperatures warm above freezing by
midday Saturday. Therefore, advisories were issued here from
00z-18z Sat. All other counties currently in advisories/warnings
were previously under Winter Storm Watch or a Winter Wx
Advisory.

.SHORT TERM /6 AM SATURDAY MORNING THROUGH MONDAY/...
As of 350 PM EST Friday...
Confidence in a significant icing event on Saturday has
continued to increase, especially in areas along and west of
I-95. Therefore, all areas in the Winter Storm Watch have been
upgraded to an Ice Storm Warning (in addition to Sussex/Greensville
Counties). Will have a buffer zone of Winter Wx Advisories a
few rows of counties SE of the warning. All warnings run through
Saturday night, while the advisories expire between 1 and 7 PM
on Saturday (from SE to NW). The 12z guidance has trended toward
an earlier onset time for the pcpn. Have lowered temperatures
a bit during the day on Saturday to account for this. Expect
widespread light to occasionally moderate pcpn to continue
across the area throughout the day on Saturday as deep moisture
increases from the WSW and the aforementioned series of upper
level disturbances track across the area. PWATs could actually
increase above 1" over central/south-central/SE VA as well as NE
NC on Saturday. Given the earlier onset time of the pcpn, more
impacts are expected further south and east from the freezing
rain. While the 32F line will slowly move NW through the day,
temperatures in areas along and NW of an AVC-EMV-XSA line are
expected to fail to rise above 32F throughout the entire day on
Sat as NNE winds continue to advect cold/dry air into the area.
Significant icing is expected across the warning area, with
additional ice accumulations averaging 0.25-0.40" (w/ localized
amounts of ~0.50" possible). On average, 0.05-0.20" of ice
accumulation is expected in the advisory area before
temperatures rise above freezing Saturday aftn. Will have to
watch Dorchester (MD) and wrn portions of Surry and James City
Counties as additional ice accums could approach 0.25" on
Saturday if temperatures do not rise as fast as currently
forecast. For now, have the advisories expiring between 18 and
21z Saturday, but these may need to be extended on future shifts
if it appears that temperatures will warm more slowly than
currently expected. Lastly, the combination of the icing
forecast and snow/ice that is already on the trees will make for
a very dangerous situation on Saturday in the warning area.
Pcpn will wane in intensity from NW to SE Saturday evening-
Saturday night with temperatures remaining below the freezing
mark generally along and west of I-95 with cold rain for SE VA,
NE NC, and most of the Lower Ern Shore. Freezing drizzle/light
freezing rain likely continues across central/wrn portions of
the area through much of Sat night. Overnight lows Saturday
night will fall into the upper 20s-around 30F west of I-95 with
low 30s to the east. Upper 30s are expected for lows Sat night
across far SE VA and NE NC. Temperatures should finally rise
above freezing across all areas by midday-early afternoon on
Sunday. Models show the potential for additional light rain
later on Sunday (highest QPFs across SE zones) after a relative
lull in the morning. Highs Sun in the upper 30s-low 40s. A weak
coastal low pulls away Sun night with precip (likely in the form
of rain with perhaps a bit of freezing rain possible in the far
NW) ending from W to E. A lull in pcpn looks likely Mon with
only slight chc PoPs for light rain. Highs Mon range from the
upper 30s NW to mid/upper 40s SE.

.LONG TERM /MONDAY NIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY/...
As of 200 PM EST Friday...
A couple more systems will move through the area early next
week. Both the ECMWF and GFS have continued to show a warmer
solution for the storm system on Tuesday. The storm tracks is
looking to be right over our area, which would mean all rain
on Tuesday. Temps will likely reach the mid to upper 40s for
central VA and Delmarva, and mid 50s to low 60s across SE VA
and NE NC Tuesday afternoon. Widespread rain is more likely
during the early morning hours on Tuesday with drying conditions
for the afternoon.
Drying will continue into Wednesday as the edge of the arctic
high pressure moves into the region. We aren't expecting the
arctic cold but temperatures will drop into the 20s across
central VA and 30s farther south and near the coast.
Next storm system will move in Thursday morning. It looks like a
more inland track as well. There is a chance for freezing rain
northwest of Richmond early Thursday morning, otherwise all
rain.

.AVIATION /03Z SATURDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
As of 200 PM EST Friday...
IFR will prevail through the TAF period, for the exception of
KSBY though KSBY will drop to IFR just after daybreak. Low
ceilings and light fog/drizzle will persist overnight with
freezing drizzle on occasion at KRIC. More widespread fog may
form across the area tonight with vis 3-5 SM. The heavier rain
(Freezing Rain at KRIC) will move in from the south Saturday
morning with ceilings around 400-600 and continue through 18z
Saturday. Rain and low ceilings are expected to persist across
the entire region through Saturday. KRIC could experience a
prolonged period of freezing rain Saturday not tapering off
until later in the afternoon or early evening.
Looking ahead another low pressure system approaches from the
SW Mon and will impact he region Mon night/Tue.

As of 400 PM EST Friday...
Late this aftn, sfc high pressure was centered well north of the
area, while sfc low pressure was located off the Carolina coast.
NNE winds were 10-20 kt with gusts to 25 kt over the waters,
with waves 2-4 ft, and seas 5-7 ft.
SCA flags remain in effect for all waters except the upper
James, York and Rappahannock rivers this evening into Sat
evening. SCA will continue through late Sat night for the srn
portions of the Bay, while have extended the SCA for all the
coastal waters through Sun aftn. The pressure gradient is
expected to relax a bit by Sun, so conditions will generally
drop a little below SCA thresholds, though seas are expected to
linger at 5ft or higher along the coast into at least Tue. A
fair amount of model spread is present with respect to the next
system that impacts the region by Tue, so have made only
minimal changes to the winds for Tue-Wed.
