With instability waning after dark, much of the convection remained sub-severe. However, some instances of damaging wind did occur, particularly along a bowing line segment in Berks County. Showers and storms continued to gradually weaken as they shifted east later in the night.

over the weekend. Another frontal system may cross the region Monday
or Tuesday.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH THURSDAY NIGHT/...
630 update: Added New Castle County to the Flash Flood Watch as
there are some indications the convective line approaching from
the west may begin to slow in that general area as a frontal
wave deepens to our South. Consequently even though the FFG is
higher than further points northwest, we could have enough
training of convective cells to generate a flash flood threat
(particularly in more urban portions of the county).
Previous discussion:
Conditions remain on the quiet side as of early this afternoon,
but that is expected to change later this evening as a cold
front impinges upon the region bringing a line of showers and
thunderstorms to the region. These will be associated with the
cold front, however, with Hurricane Larry staying well offshore
over the open Atlantic.
The main concerns with this line of convection continues to be the
threat for tornadoes and flash flooding, the latter being due in
part to antecedent conditions from the remnants of Ida. The good
news is that the timing of the front has continued to slow to a
degree, pushing through our area more in the overnight hours than
daylight hours, with an associated slight stabilization of the
boundary layer occurring.
Synoptically, a deepening mid-level shortwave trough axis across
Ontario will continue to push eastward into Quebec with a surface
low driving eastward in a similar manner. A trailing cold front
across the Ohio Valley continues to scoop up moisture from the Gulf
of Mexico where Mindy could be on its way to forming. This front
will sweep through the region tonight, with drier weather returning
for tomorrow as northwesterly flow overtakes the region.
With forecast helicity values nearing 200 m2/s2, the tornado threat
is nothing to dismiss tonight, though the slowing of the front
pushes it through with slightly lower forecast values than a few
forecast cycles a go occuring so some of the latest hi-res guidance.
The pre-frontal trough has also been a bit weaker today, which has
tended to lower the threat for a prefrontal area of thunderstorms.
Some of the guidance has a little hint of these occuring in the next
few hours, but the current cu field is not all that impressive. Of
other note, the DCAPE is quite impressive with over 1000 J/kg across
our region, which would be supportive of a few microbursts. This is
also supported by a weak dry layer between 800 and 600 mb.
The details of the flash flood potential can be found the the
Hydrology section near the end of this AFD. PWats will rise to
around 1.5" to close to 2" closer to the coast ahead of the
aforementioned cold front. This means that any stronger storms that
form will be capable of producing locally heavy rain (1 to 2+ inches
of rain in a brief period of time). Generally speaking, widespread
rainfall totals of around 0.5-1" is expected in the watch area with
the potential for localized amounts up to 2". The general placement
of the flash flood concern and associated watch is due in part to
this week's rainfall being nearly 600% of normal near and northwest
of the Fall Line.
For Thursday, the front may linger a bit along the coast with
lingering showers into the early morning. Lingering clouds with the
front stalling to our southeast will keep things overcast,
especially closer to the coast. Cooler highs in the mid to upper 70s
and northwesterly winds from 5 to 10 mph.

.SHORT TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT/...
High pressure starts to build in from the west for Friday
before moving overhead on Saturday. With the high dominating the
region, we should remain dry with below to slightly below
normal temperatures.
Daytime highs will be in the low to mid 70s on Friday with slight
increases into the mid to upper 70s on Saturday. Areas across the
southern Poconos will be even cooler with highs topping out in the
60s both days.
Overnight lows Friday night will be cool with light winds and clear
skies across the region. Temperatures will dip down into the 50s,
with some 40s possible across the southern Poconos. The air mass
should modify some for Saturday night and overnight lows will be in
the upper 50s to lower 60s.

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
Quiet weather will continue through Sunday as the high shifts
further offshore. With a return flow around the high, we should see
additional warming and high temperatures will rise back into the
lower 80s through much of the forecast area. Some slight increase in
cloud cover may occur overnight but we should still radiate fairly
well. The southwest flow will keep overnight temperatures warmer and
mainly in the 60s.
As we head towards Monday, we start to see some differences in the
guidance. What we see consistently on the guidance is a cold front
approaching the region from the west but the timing and strength of
the front differs, leaving us with an unsettled forecast. The
boundary may start to move in to our area Monday with the potential
for some showers or thunderstorms across our northernmost zones. The
boundary may stall over or near the area and with several shortwaves
crossing the region there will be the potential for showers and
thunderstorms to continue through midweek. Best chances at this time
still appear to be across our northern and western areas so we
continue to keep POPs in those areas. Strong southwest flow at 850mb
will bring in much warmer air and daytime temps should have no
problem rising into the mid to upper 80s through the midweek period.

thunderstorms move into the region from west to east. Mostly VFR
through 23Z with MVFR conditions developing especially after 00Z.
Southwest winds from 10 to 15 knots. A few gusts to 20 knots at
times. Moderate confidence.
Tonight...MVFR with some brief IFR at times as a line of showers and
embedded thunderstorms move through the region, especially at ABE
and RDG. Winds turning west-northwesterly from 5 to 10 knots.
Moderate confidence.
Thursday...Sub-VFR conditions possible in the early morning will
clear to VFR as any lingering showers move offshore. Westerly winds

Rip Currents...
Long period swells emanating from Hurricane Larry will create a
HIGH risk for the development of dangerous rip currents on
Wednesday. The elevated risk of rip currents will likely
continue on Thursday and Friday, and perhaps into Saturday.

.HYDROLOGY...
Thunderstorms, potentially in a couple rounds, are forecast this
evening. Flash flood guidance remains very low (around 0.5" in 1
hour on average) across much of the area where we have a Flash Flood
Watch in effect. This watch is in effect from 4 PM this afternoon
through 2 AM Thursday. This watch serves mainly to highlight the
potential for rapid runoff of any heavy rain that falls given the
very saturated soils from recent heavy rainfall events across the
area. While this system will be fairly progressive, it will not take
much rainfall to cause flash flooding of urban, flood prone, and
other low-lying areas.
