Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Mount Holly NJ 705 PM EDT Tue Sep 28 2021 .SYNOPSIS... A cold front will continue to shift offshore this evening and out to sea tonight. As low pressure moves across the Canadian Maritimes Wednesday and Thursday, a couple of weak surface troughs may move across the region. High pressure is forecast to affect the Mid Atlantic and northeast states Friday into Saturday. A frontal boundary is forecast to affect the area late in the weekend into early next week. && .NEAR TERM /THROUGH WEDNESDAY/... For the early evening update, significantly decreased PoPs through the remainder of the evening. Now that we are past sunset and the vorticity maximum associated with the mid level trough is off shore, the window of opportunity for new convective development is rapidly closing. In addition, the front which had been nearly stationary to our northwest for much of the day has finally started making quick progress southeast through the region. As of 7 PM, the front was over the Delaware Valley already. The lone thunderstorm complex in our area (over Chester and Montgomery Counties as of 7 PM) should continue to progress southeastward along the front for another few hours before dissipating. Outside of that complex isolated showers are possible, but not expecting any more organized thunderstorm complexes. Expecting showers and storms to be done across our region by late this evening. Skies will clear behind the cold front and lead to a cloud-free sunrise. Overnight lows will drop into the mid 40s well north and west and in the 50s elsewhere. Winds will veer to the northwest behind the front and likely hang out in the 5 to 10 mph range. Surface high pressure will build into the area tomorrow as a deep closed low spins over Maine. Highs tomorrow will be in the 60s to lower 70s. Sunny skies can be expected along with northwest winds around 10 mph and gusts up to 20 mph. && .SHORT TERM /WEDNESDAY NIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY NIGHT/... Surface low pressure will move across the Canadian Maritimes Wednesday night through Thursday night, while a cut off low aloft drifts across the northeast states and into southeast Canada. A couple of weak surface troughs may move across the region, however, there is not much moisture forecast during this period with precipitable water values of 0.50 inches or less. The main effects during this period will be an increase in cloud cover during the day Thursday due to a potent short wave/vorticity impulse forecast to move across the area. Overall, a dry and seasonably cool period is expected Wednesday night through Thursday night. && .LONG TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/... The long term forecast begins rather benign and dry overall for Friday through Saturday. High pressure is forecast to build southward out of southeastern Canada Friday through Saturday, before move out of the area Saturday night. Northwest flow aloft will keep temperatures seasonably cool and dry weather in place through Saturday. Then questions develop for the remainder of the weekend into early next week due to model differences. The GFS breaks down the high and retreats it northward as a frontal boundary approaches from the south and stalls near the area into early next week. However, the ECMWF, Canadian, and other guidance shift the high to our south while a backdoor cold front moves into the area, before stalling near the area into early next week. Due to the uncertainty in the model guidance, we have stayed close to the National Blend of Models (NBM) forecast. Either way, there will be a chance of showers from Sunday through Tuesday. If the backdoor cold front solution ends up being the outcome, temperatures over the weekend into early next week could be a few degrees warmer than forecast before the front moves through. && .AVIATION /00Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
