.SYNOPSIS...
A cold front will move through the region today before moving
offshore tonight. High pressure will build across the region for
Thursday and Friday moving offshore over the weekend. Another
cold front will move through the area Monday night into Tuesday,
stalling to our south.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
Severe Thunderstorm Watch 385 now in effect for most of the
region. Carbon and Monroe counties not included in the Watch.

A complex pattern setting up today with another round of severe
weather possible this afternoon. Hail and damaging winds will
be the primary threats.

An upper level through axis is centered near the United States/
Canadian border this morning, with mid-level flow around 30/40
kts. This seasonably strong trough axis is accompanied with a 50
m height fall and 30 m height rise couplet with a rather messy
upper level jet. This messy upper level jet is thanks to a piece
of energy that has broken off from the main upper level trough
axis and has actually closed off over southeast Texas. This
closed low will continue to retrograde underneath a mid-level
cyclone and hasten its collapse. As this occurs, the mid-level
wave over the east coast of the United States will sweep east
and keep a relatively neutral tilt as it does so. The core of
the DCVA appears to sweep across northern NJ, PA, and
south/central NY this afternoon with a rather impressive amount
of lift for the summer. In the low levels of the atmosphere, a
cold front is forecast to sweep across the region this
afternoon.

The mid-level wave will be quickly approaching from the west.
The DCVA will help to re-establish the lee side trough with
winds turning from the south/southwest over the coastal plain of
NJ and west across eastern PA. The CIN that was over the area
this morning is eroding, and SBCAPE values are rising to
1000-2000 J/kg across the northern half of the forecast area and
as high as 3000 J/kg in Delmarva. Low and mid-level lapse rates
are approaching 7 degrees C. The uncertainty with the forecast
today regards where will the convection initiate first. The are
two surface features which could serve as the impetus. The first
being the cold front, and the second being the lee side trough
(a potential, but less likely third, is an inland moving sea
breeze). The cold front being the impetus for CI does appear to
be a threat, esp given the backed winds thanks to the outflow.
Overall though, surface convergence along the front isn't
extremely impressive. The best surface convergence forecast
today is actually along the lee side trough. Given this, have
trended the forecast to have the highest chance of precipitation
to be over the Lehigh Valley and east. The end solution will
likely not be a binary one though (meaning one or another), but
rather an amalgamation of the two.

As the thunderstorms initiate, deep layer shear values are
forecast to be around 35 kts with a rather unidirectional wind
profile. These rather straight hodographs and deep layer shear
values favor a potential for some splitting supercells in the
warm sector. As the boundary approaches though, deep layer shear
values are boundary oblique with supercell motion being more
orthogonal to the boundary. Anvil-level storm-relative flow is
also boundary oblique. All of the above would favor discrete
cells initially (some splitting occurring), with upscale growth
soon thereafter. Steep lapse rates mentioned above will also
promote rapid updraft intensification. The primary threats with
these storms will be damaging wind gusts and large hail (rather
low WBZ heights).

Later this afternoon into evening, the cold front will sweep
through the region with PWATs falling rapidly from around 1.75"
to ~0.7" (near the 10th percentile for this time of year). The
rather impressive low level CAA for this time of year will
actually promote some wind gusts approaching 20 MPH behind the
frontal passage. Later in the evening, the PBL will begin to
decouple allowing a slow fall off of the gusts. Low temperature
tonight will be primarily in the low to mid 60s.

.SHORT TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH FRIDAY NIGHT/...
High pressure begins to build in from the west, and CAA will be
underway and a drier airmass begins to spread into the region
Wednesday night. Lows will be in the 50s to the north and west
and in the 60s elsewhere. But of note, surface dew points will
begin to drop, generally from the mid and upper 60s in the
evening to the upper 50s and around 60 by daybreak Thursday.

Arguably the nicest day of the summer is on tap for Thursday as
high pressure builds into the Ohio Valley with abundant
sunshine. Northerly flow on the east side of that high ushers a
cooler airmass into the region. Highs will be a few degrees
below normal, topping off in the lower 80s, except for the
southern Poconos which will be in the 70s. Northern New Jersey
and the Lehigh Valley will be in the upper 70s to low 80s.

With afternoon mixing, dew points will drop into the mid 50s.
Which will feel quite autumnal compared to some of the days
that have occurred this July.

High pressure continues to build east Thursday night. Lows once
again in the 50s to the north and in the 60s elsewhere.

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
The trough aloft moves offshore on Saturday as the surface high
starts to settle over the western Atlantic and we see a surface
trough develop over the Mid-Atlantic. Low pressure will pass to the
north of the area on Monday, dragging a cold front through our area
Monday night into Tuesday. The front may then stall nearby or just
to the south of area.

Several shortwaves will cross the region through the early part of
the week, keeping us unsettled with chances for showers and
thunderstorms. While there will be a chance for storms each day, the
majority of the time it will be dry and we are not expecting it to
be a total washout.

Temperatures will be more seasonable with highs in the mid to upper
80s (cooler to the north). As we head into the early part of the
week, the 90s may start creeping back in and dew points will be on
the rise, returning us to a slightly muggier air mass. Behind the
front, we should see dew points drop back down a little bit.

.AVIATION /17Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG,
KILG, KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas.

Rest of this afternoon (18Z-00Z)...MVFR VSBY in HZ will
dissipate, and VSBY will become VFR. SHRA/TSRA with brief sub-
VFR conditions in +RA, hail, and potentially damaging winds.
Will carry TEMPO groups for convection until 21Z-22Z. W-NW winds
less than 10 kt, except higher in TSRA over terminals. Gusts to
20 kt possible for a few hours behind immediate passage of cold
front. High confidence in overall pattern, low confidence on
timing of TSRA passing over a given terminal.

Tonight (00Z-12Z)...VFR/becoming SKC. NW winds 5 kt or less.
High confidence.

Thursday (12Z-00Z)...VFR. NW winds less than 10 kt. High
confidence.

Outlook...

Thursday...Mostly VFR. West to northwest winds around 5 to 10 knots.
High confidence.

Friday...Mostly VFR. Sub-VFR conditions possible in isolated showers
and thunderstorms. Light west to northwest winds. High confidence
with low confidence on storms reaching the terminals.

Saturday...Mostly VFR. Sub-VFR conditions possible in showers and
thunderstorms. Southerly winds around 5 to 10 knots. High confidence
with low confidence on storms reaching the terminals.

Sunday...Mostly VFR. Sub-VFR conditions possible in scattered
showers and thunderstorms. Southwest winds around 10 to 15 knots.
Moderate confidence.

.MARINE...
Today and tonight...Sub-SCA conditions expected with showers
and thunderstorms forming this afternoon into evening. Localized
higher winds and seas can be expected within any thunderstorms.
Mostly SW to W winds 10 to 15 knots then becoming W/NW late.

Outlook...

Thursday through Sunday...Sub-Small Craft Advisory conditions are
expected across the area waters. Scattered showers and thunderstorms
on Saturday and Sunday may produce locally higher winds and
waves.

Rip Currents...

Rest of today and Wednesday...Low with medium period waves and
limited seas.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
Limited minor flooding occurred on the tidal Delaware River
overnight but with the midday high tide being the lower of the high
tides, do not anticipate a similar occurrence through the rest of
today. There is the potential that tonight's high tide on the tidal
Delaware River may hit minor flooding again but should remain below
advisory levels.

As we move into the Thursday and Friday evening high tides, some
coastal areas could approach at least minor flood thresholds. The
full moon is on Friday which will lead to higher astronomical tides
Thursday and Friday, but there may also be enough of a down-shore
component to the wind to push enough water back toward land to
increase tidal levels, especially on Thursday.
