Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Mount Holly NJ
331 PM EDT Wed Jul 14 2021

.SYNOPSIS...
A weak front will move away from the area early tonight. High
pressure will then slowly shift westward across the Southeast
states through Friday. A slow-moving cold front and upper trough
will slowly move eastward towards the East Coast this weekend
and next Monday. More high pressure will arrive next week.

&&

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THURSDAY /...

The overall surface pattern is forecast to remain the same through
Thursday with high pressure anchored off the Carolina coast and a
lee-side trough meandering in the Middle Atlantic states.

An impulse traveling in the mid level flow is expected to pass over
our region this evening. As it approaches, additional showers and
thunderstorms should develop. The coverage of the showers and
thunderstorms is anticipated to remain scattered, so not all
locations in eastern Pennsylvania, eastern Maryland, Delaware and
New Jersey will receive rainfall.

Mixed layer CAPE values will remain into the 1500 to 2000 J/kg range
in much of our region until we lose daytime heating. While the
instability will be present, shear is expected to be limited. As a
result, the storms are not expected to become well organized. There
is enough of a westerly flow to keep the convection moving, so
nothing more than a brief downpour or two is possible with a very
limited threat of flooding.

The convection will likely dissipate this evening with the loss of
daylight. The sky is forecast to be mostly clear overnight. Patchy
low clouds and fog are possible late tonight, especially at
locations where rain falls during this afternoon and this evening.
However, the low clouds and fog should not be nearly as widespread
as they were the past two mornings when the lingering frontal
boundary was in our region.

Low temperatures will favor the upper 60s and lower 70s with a light
and variable wind.

While the lee-side trough is expected to remain in our region on
Thursday, the lack of any mid level trigger should preclude the
development of showers and thunderstorms at that time. We will
forecast mostly sunny conditions for Thursday although a field of
cumulus will likely develop in the afternoon, especially over
eastern Pennsylvania and northern New Jersey.

High temperatures are expected to reach the lower 90s in our region,
with locations in the elevated terrain and along the immediate coast
not getting above the 80s. Slightly drier air may mix down from
aloft during the afternoon, possibly bringing dew point readings
down into the upper 60s for a time. We are anticipating that heat
index values will peak in the upper 90s, so we will not issue a Heat
Advisory, although it will be close.

The wind on Thursday is expected to favor the south and southwest
around 5 to 10 MPH.

&&

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THURSDAY MORNING THROUGH 6 AM FRIDAY/...
Fair weather but muggy conditions overnight Thursday into Friday
morning. Some patchy low clouds and fog are possible however.
Lows will only drop into the low/mid 70s for much of the
region. Some upper 60s are possible N/W.

&&

.LONG TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
The hottest day of the long term, and the entire forecast period,
awaits for Friday as an upper ridge builds back across the Middle
Atlantic. Highs on Friday will probably be a few degrees warmer
than Thursday with widespread low 90s for the area and upper 80s
for the NW areas and close to the shore. A few spotty mid 90s are
possible too. The humidity levels will be elevated as well, so it
apparent temps will be in the low 100s in many spots. Heat advisory
flags are possible for the period unless more cloudiness arrives
and keeps temperatures a few degree cooler.

As the weekend progresses, an upper trough settles across the area
and a weak surface front will approach. While this will help keep
temperatures a bit cooler, that will be because of more frequent
clouds and tstms. Since the dew points will be in the upper 60s/low
70s for much of the time, more downpours can be expected this weekend.
Highs will be near 90 Saturday and in the mid/upper 80s for Sunday.
Chances of rain will be high chance/low likely for NW areas Saturday
while slight chc to low chc pops will be across the coastal areas.
By Sunday high chc/low likely pops will be across the whole areas.

Into next week, the upper trough will continue over the area
Monday, but pops will likely be less than Sunday with the best
dynamics probably having moved east of the area. Uncertainty
predominates as we continue into next week, but Tuesday and
Wednesday will probably still have shower activity across the
area. With the diffuse pattern and uncertain features, we will
just have chc pops in the fcst for Tue/Wed for now. Temperatures
will likely remain a little above normal.

&&

.AVIATION /19Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG, KILG,
KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas.

This evening...Mainly VFR. Scattered showers and thunderstorms may
briefly reduce conditions to MVFR/IFR. South to west wind 5 to 10
knots. Medium confidence.

Tonight...Mainly VFR. Localized ceiling and visibility restrictions
are possible toward morning. Variable wind 5 knots or less. Medium
confidence.

Thursday...Mainly VFR. South to southwest wind 5 to 10 knots. High
confidence.

Outlook...

Thu night thru Monday...Generally VFR. Scattered late afternoon
and evening showers and tstms may bring short periods of lower
CIGS or VSBYS. Early morning fog or low clouds are also
possible.

&&

.MARINE...
We are anticipating a typical summer-time pattern on the coastal
waters of New Jersey and Delaware through Thursday. The wind should
favor the south and southwest around 10 knots. Wave heights on our
ocean waters are forecast to be 2 to 3 feet, with waves on Delaware
Bay at 2 feet or less.

Outlook...

sub-SCA much of the time. The main hazard through the period will be
scattered tstms with locally higher winds and seas mostly during the
late afternoon and evening hours. Marine fog is possible during the
overnight and early morning hours also.
