Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Las Vegas NV 0312 AM PDT Wed Sep 22 2021 .SYNOPSIS...For the first day of the Autumn season, temperatures will warm to above normal and these warm conditions will continue through the weekend. An area of low pressure forecast to set up south of the area late this week could lead to a few showers across our southern areas on Sunday. && .SHORT TERM...Wednesday through Friday. On the synoptic scale, the ridge axis which had been centered over Nevada yesterday has transitioned to the east tonight. An incoming Pacific shortwave will move into the Pacific Northwest this morning and then into the northern Great Basin this afternoon. Regardless, the effects from this system and the suppression of the ridge will have little if any impact on our weather. Warmer temperatures are expected today with highs rising above normal. There could also be areas were southwest breezes pick up this afternoon, most notably along the Sierra crest. The shortwave is forecast to dive south across Utah on Thursday eventually developing a closed circulation to our south centered over northern Baja. The system gets separated from the flow and is forecast to meander around the northern Baja region. Temperatures in general are expected to settle back closer to seasonal levels both Thursday and Friday. .LONG TERM...Saturday through Tuesday. Latest ensemble and deterministic model runs continue to trend toward the drier end this weekend as a cutoff low which was previously forecast to set up off the southern CA coast now is further south and east. The models are still indicating the potential of some moisture being drawn northward late Saturday into Sunday with at least a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms mainly south of I-15. Even the latest WPC Guidance has shown a decrease in QPF across our southern zones. There still looks to be some decent instability across southern Mohave County Sunday afternoon, so there is some potential of seeing thunderstorms across that area. Instability gets weaker further to the north and west. This low will shift east Monday ahead of a fairly deep through that looks to impact the west coast during the middle part of next week. The latest ensembles indicate that much of the energy associated with this trough will remain across the Pacific NW where the better chances of precipitation will occur. For our area, it looks like breezy to windy conditions along with cooler temperatures. && .AVIATION...For McCarran...Winds near the terminal will remain relatively light, following diurnal patterns. Smoke from California wildfires will begin moving into the area around 00Z on Thursday. This smoke will not have any impacts on surface visibility, but may result in hazy skies at times. Outside of the possibility of occasional hazy skies, no impactful weather is expected at or near the terminal. For the rest of southern Nevada, northwest Arizona and southeast California...For KVGT, KHND, KEED, and KIFP winds will remain relatively light and will follow diurnal patterns. Skies around these sites may begin to become hazy Thursday afternoon as upper- level smoke moves into the area from California wildfires. This smoke should not impact visibility at the surface. For KBIH, surface smoke in the Owens Valley may result in decreased visibility at the surface to as low as 5 statute miles between 15Z Wednesday and 03Z Thursday. Winds at KBIH will be light and diurnal through 00Z when winds will shift more towards the west and will gust around 18 kts. More northerly wind gusts are possible overnight before the winds become light and variable in the around 10Z on Thursday. For KDAG, westerly winds will dominate for the next 24 to 36 hours with wind gusts around 15 kts picking up in the afternoon.
