Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Pocatello ID 244 AM MST Sat Dec 25 2021 .SHORT TERM...Today through Sunday night. Long-wave trough remains anchored over the western US while a couple of shortwaves rotate through the PAC NW over the next couple of days. High-res models show a rather disorganized pattern of snowfall this morning. As we head into the afternoon, a southerly flow will develop as we see some subtle warm front lifting through the Magic Valley northward into the Sun Valley area. By Sunday morning, a cold front will swing through with the heavier snow shifting to the Eastern and Southeastern Highlands. Extended our winter headlines through Sunday afternoon as these areas could pick up a quick burst of snow along the front. Winds along and behind the front will be strong enough to produce some blowing and drifting across roads. The cold front should exit the state around mid-day Sunday, but post-frontal winds will remain strong into the evening. Precipitation will taper off through Sunday night, though some light snow may persist across the forecast area while another trough approaches from the west. Hinsberger .LONG TERM...An active wx pattern is expected to continue for the foreseeable future, although following a strong cold frontal passage Mon, we'll start to break things up a bit better and have more defined breaks between periods of precip potential. Widespread snow will continue Mon pre-front, with a relative break Tue. There is some low- confidence potential of an embedded wave bringing snow Wed (the Canadian is far wetter than other models), followed by another brief lull Thu AM before a much more organized shortwave brings widespread snow Thu eve into Fri/Sat. Snow totals are coming in on the light side so far for this late week system. The main story remains the coldest air of the season working into the region post-front Mon night, "peaking" Tue and Wed, and only slowly moderating beyond that. Highs Tue/Wed may only reach the single digits and teens, with lows Tue/Wed/Thu AMs below zero almost everywhere north of the Snake River. Raw model guidance continues to run anywhere from 5-15 degrees colder than the NBM and other blends, but as the NBM slowly trends colder toward these solutions, the raw guidance has crept a few degrees warmer. One reason for this could be quite a bit of forecast cloud cover, but it's likely both sides of the fence will continue to trend toward a meeting in the middle somewhere. Only took 2-5 degrees off NBM-led highs and lows in the forecast (less compared to previous forecast packages), and held there for now. 01 && .AVIATION...TAFs continue to be extremely challenging as the pattern has supported almost continuous waves of snow, and the suite of high-res models have really struggled to accurately "model" each wave (not to mention poor run-to-run consistency), making it difficult to pin down start and end times of potential impact periods. The main idea for today is elevated/gusty winds this AM will trend down between 10z/3am and 14z/7am, with IFR to LIFR TEMPOs covering hit-and-miss snow showers under an otherwise VCSH and VFR to MVFR forecast. We'll have to monitor radar trends for potential upgrades to predominant snow. Vsbys are dropping below 1SM with the heavier snow showers, but recovering nicely in between.
